CD Article: 2006 Audi A3 2.0T DSG

You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
Test Drive:
2006 Audi A3 2.0T DSG

2006 Audi A3 2.0T DSGReviewer Haney Louka was enamoured with the Audi A3's DSG (Direct-shift gearbox) transmission.  "While one clutch engages a given gear, the other clutch readies itself on the next gear up for lightning-quick shifts, on the order of three to four hundredths of a second. The end result is a car that's as quick as or quicker than the same car with a conventional manual transmission," he says.    More...

An update to all the features and options listed in the review, S-line has replaced Sports Pkg for 2007 A3 2.0T. Everything else from 06 Sports Pkg remains intact except for the additional S-line emblems for cachet. ;D So that you don't have to go 3.2Q for a full-blown S-line in A3 anymore.

Not until they can put DSG into 2.0T Quattro.

A 2.0T quattro would get my attention esp with DSG.   But it would be a Haldex Quattro not a "real" Torsen Quattro and I suspect the price would get very close to a CPO 325xi or 330xi.

I liked my chipped A4 a lot and would have kept it if had been just a bit bigger inside ( tried to buy an A6 to replace it and was told that no manual transmission in A6 3.0 in NA for ever...soooo off to the BMW shop)
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Damn it Audi Tom. According to your sig, you've got an A3 along with many other cool rides (not to mention a Cayman S  :o) and we STILL haven't seen and pics of them. What did we do to deserve this  :'(

I almost got into one of these back in January, but the dealer couldn't give me the trade value I needed to make it work. From all the A3s I've driven I've always felt that the A3 offers a more involved driving experience than the softer A4. I have the keys to a M-B B200 on my desk today and although roomier, it's not nearly as sporty-feeling as an A3.

Below $33,000, I think this really is a bargain for a German luxury sporty car..although the price goes higher fast when you add options.

I absolutely love the A3.

It's a nicely sized hatch, great driving characteristics, and fabulous interior - it's an Audi, is that a surprise? I wonder what the reliability is like? :drv2:

As much as I like the A3, I just find it too confining after sampling a B200 Turbo. Quite an eye opener. They're both gems - glad to see neither is considered a flop in the market.

GIT as I would equp one (DSG, Silver, Sunroof) 32,870 (including destination) not sure how much more GTI 5 door is yea but lets add  $800 just to be safe. So 33 ,700

A3 Equipped as close as possible (silver, DSG Sunroof) 37 450.

Hmmmmm

I can't get the equipment I would have wanted in an A3 without getting leather, which I didn't want. So, I was at $40Gs even versus under $34 for the GTI 5dr and $35 for one with leather. And I wasn't comfy in the A3 because of the low roof. HOWEVER, I must add that I LOVE the selection of A3 paints. Moro Blue, Murano Green, Venetian Violet, reds, shades, black, white, it's all there
 I would happily pay the MSRP cost for the paint I wanted.

B200 Turbo is more of a performance crossover with plenty of interior space, while A3 is a classy performance hatchback with adequate interior volume. That explains why 2 are segmented into similar price class but appeal to different buyers. However, both have succeed in a market where hatchback doesn't equal expensive.

Notably absent in the review was any mention of the VW GTI which in 4 door trim is essentially the same car available for $3K less.  Lets see, could it be that Audi didn't want this inconvenient bit of information known to the buying public?

A couple of car journalists in the UK suggested that whilst the Audi A3 is a fantastic car, better value for money could be had by buying the VW Golf V (a.k.a cute fluffy bunny rabbit) loaded with a ton of extras for less money.

Same car, different trimmings, more stuff.

But in Canada you can't get all of the options available on the A3 / Euro Golf on the Rabbit or GTI.

Climatronic, NAVI, this, that, and the other.

True. But all of the options that I do want are available on the Golf. For less than $30,000.

Whilst I adore the design of the Audi A3.... I would probably go for a loaded Golf if I had to replace the Volvo today.

I love the A3.  It's similar to my P5 but does everything better.  Well, maybe not reliability but that's still an unknown.  If I was looking for a car in this price range it would be at the top of my list.
