2001 Forester "off road"
« on: July 18, 2006, 05:08:41 pm »
Due to "popular request", I've posted the pictures I still have from one of the 2001 Forester S "off road" excursions. Obviously, I would never have tried to do any rock crawling with it, but it did handle some rather rough forestry roads with little drama. Traction was NEVER an issue, but the approach and departure angles were. The last few pictures are testimony to this fact.  :'( The worst part was that I was alone for all of this and there were no other vehicles using the roads. An assistant outside of the car to direct would have been greatly appreciated at times. The idea of making a critical error was not appealing.  :o ;D

Cool... I think the battle scars on the Subie just validate it's utility.  :)

Avt is a fanatic about clean - he washed it in a mud puddle.. ;)

What I find amazing is that you could drive and take outside pix all at the same time........... :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

Is that Port Alberni's main roadway?  Nice pics, how does the Yaris handle those roads now?   :rofl2:

Close - only about 500 km away. The Yaris has MUCH better approach and departure angles, but I don't think I'll be looking too hard to find similar road here on which to test him.  ;)

Thanks for the shots, very nice.  And a very capable vehicle (and driver  ;D).

And I know what you mean about approach/departure angles.  In my pictures, the back of the Pathy would bang the trailer hitch on some of those cross ditches (that’s why I have the hitch, good protection  ;D)

Not quite, a little east of me.  I am Cascade Forest District (Merritt and Lillooet).

I'm no genius when it comes to Forest Districts !!!  :P

Maybe this area around Kelowna is the Kamloops Forest District? It would be the first thing that Kam has over Kel then..hehe... ;D ;D

In any event, Avt, Rufus go play in the mud and stays clean - the only way you could do that is just be creeping thru the holes (which I assume any sane person would do). Scratches on the bumper tho..a no-no.  :o

Alright, I added the picture of mud stuck in the fog lamp just to make you guys happy. Most of the pictures were actually taken in the Scuitto, Hosil, Frisken, Roche Lake area which is not that far from Nicola Lake.  ;) I did creep through the mud as I had no idea as to the depth most of the time. Solo is NOT a smart way to do this sort of thing. But it was fun.  8) ;D

All you need is a come-along if you are solo, that and a long rope, snatch block, shovel, axe, ... you get the idea  ;D

Never been to the Roche Lake area but hear it is quite nice.

For the 30 years before I got the Forester, most of my flyfishing was done between Merritt and Princton. Early in the season I might try Kentucky, then move up to Kump, Goose, Thalia, etc. as the summer progressed. Nothing quite like a 2-5 lb. Kamloops trout on a really light flyrod.  :lick:

Cool.  Reminds me (though not as extreme) of touring forest roads with my Dad in the trusty Plymouth Reliant wagon while hunting for grouse.

Soon to be repeated, tho, (Pepe.RutRo or Snowy is better).  Sounds like a new F150 could be in the works, right?  ;)

Very nice, thanks. Another weapon in my arsenal to convince my wife to consider the Forester. She's a photographer and would like to go places like these. She agrees with everything except vetoes it on its looks.  :)

Thanks. BTW, the rear differential WAS shielded!!  ;D

It also had the rear deflector - ugly, but it made a world of difference in terms of keeping dust and other crud off of the rear window once I had it installed.
