2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS

Just in time for the weekend and new week ahead comes the Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged.  Featuring a 205hp supercharged 2.0L ECOTEC engine, a 5-speed short-throw performance manual transmission, performance suspension system and riding on 18” graphite coloured aluminum wheels, the Cobalt may become every boy racer’s dream with a warranty.   More ....

Looks like I’m drawing quite a lot of attention driving this Cobalt, luckily it has all been positive and none of the negative kind, nor has any of it come from the hands of the law.  I have noticed, as well as others, that the Sunset Orange colour on my tester is very similar to that of Mazda's Mazda3 sedan in burnt orange, it is a sharp looking colour and very bold. Out of all the vehicles I have tested this year the Cobalt SS Supercharged has been one of the most impressive.  Certainly going into this review I was not expected the Cobalt to be as impressive as it truly is.  It is in no way the new Cavalier, this vehicle is in a whole new league.  . More ....

The Cobalt SS is one car that fuel economy is directly correlated to the amount of pressure you apply to the gas pedal.  When I first stepped in the vehicle I was constantly "testing" its capabilities and as a result I was returning a measured 12L/100km, over the week I became less and less aggressive in my driving style and brought the fuel economy down to a respectable 9.3L/100km 50/50, highway and city.   More ....

I can't believe the amount of cobalt SS's that I'm seeing around over the past few weeks. I wonder what sales numbers are like for it. It wouldn't suprise me if they were pretty high. I guess the only downside is the commonality of the car. Otherwise, good effort by GM.

This car is terrific value for the money - IIRC they are about $26k for the SS Supercharged.  :D

Good luck, should be fun. I hate that colour. What on earth kind of orange is that. It should be in loud yellow or something. Maybe it grows on ya after a while. looking foward to your thoughts......

I am not sure if the orange/copper is a copy of the Mazda 3 GT - copper was their advertising colour when the 3 was first introduced. I'd have no issue with burnt orange or canary yellow. I tend to think that Pocket-Rockets usually look best when dressed with in-your-face colours.

Don't like the front / grill of the Cobalt, the rest of the car looks good.  The color is OK IMO. There are two Toxic Orange Mazdaspeed Protege here, now that is bright.  8) The Mazda color looked better in print.

You know.....without the wing it would be a great looking car. The back end is high and already has the lip spoiler. Why the Big Bad Wing?

Hey James, What about the sound system. GM has spent some serious dollars advertising the sound system on this car. Give us the details. Thanks, Rick

Wing mentioned a bit about those Recaro seats, wonder how much digestibility there is. Looks somewhat similar to the ones in the E30, which has lots of adjustment, the front portion of the seat can be adjusted to fore-after, which is a very neat feature.

You certainly can't digest the seats but the e30 sport seats offer a wide range of adjustability.  I had the sport seats in the 318is (exact ones as pictured in ID's photo) and they offer good range.  Lumbar, tilt, rake...it is all good.  They are snug though, so the people with girth can be pinched and lose circulation.

GM definitely has a Winner on its hands as that is good value for the money in this car. Its a really good effort getting this car to the marketplace and they will and are selling like Hotcakes. We have a lot of them on the road in London as well and there will be many more to follow.  :)

Two drove past me in Newmarket in the span of 30 seconds.  I see them on the highway all the time.  Of course, the bright colours and funny-looking wing make them stand out, but they are certainly selling.

As nice as Chevrolet Cobalt  looks would It hold its vaule as much as 2006 Honda Civic Si? The answer is no. Maybe this would be a smarter purchased used cause I think it would be dirt cheap in a few years. Plus all the niggling things that might go wrong would be fixed under the warranty if any issue do crop up.

I must admit I like SI styling more. Its not so in ya face.

The Civic Si is really nice.

If it were me buying, unless I was really hard-core, I'd probably opt for the regular Cobalt SS with the still great and torquey 171hp engine for just over $21Gs + options.

Cobalt SS is comprable to the Civic in horsepower and price alone...  when it comes to performance, the supercharged engine delivers torque way lower than the Si, so it will rape the Honda off the line.  The SS (non-blown) and Pursuit GT are much more levelled competitors, with their larger displacement making up for the hp discrepency.

I think everyone here knows my thoughts on the Pursuit GT, too.  :D

Out of all the vehicles I have tested this year the Cobalt SS Supercharged has been one of the most impressive. Certainly going into this review I was not expected the Cobalt to be as impressive

So does this mean your in love, Is this end of your S2000? ;)
