From Golf TDI to Golf GTI, with a Rabbit Timewarp
« on: July 11, 2006, 02:24:15 pm »
My friend brought over his prestine Mars Red '84 Rabbit Convertible, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to take photos of the new '07 GTI and Rabbit together. He always keeps his cars immaculate, and this one is no exception - really a delight to see and ride in.

As for mine, well... I haven't washed it since I got it a week ago so although it hasn't rained you'll see it's not brilliantly clean.

Included photos of my ex-2001 Golf TDI too since I hadn't really posted them before and that was my ride for much of my driving career.

We took well over 50 photos, but haven't posted them all.

Additional photos of the Golf TDI: http://www.scush.com/h/sc/2001GolfTDI/
Additional photos of the GTI & Rabbit: http://www.onecommunity.com/h/sc/media/2006.07.09%20Erik%20R.%20GTI%20and%20Erik%20H.%20Rabbit/
And Guy's new Ram 1500 Quad Cab Sport 4X4, which hogs the driveway but leaves me enough space to slot myself in there. They get along well together: http://www.scush.com/h/sc/

Sweet rides.  The Rabbit looks to be nicely maintained.  Not nearly as quick as the GTI, I remember almost buying an early 80's GTI for me when I was in my teens, but it wasn't in nearly as nice a condition.

Thanks for the pics SAM. What a nice way to display VW history That Rabbit is in amazing condition. Dewd, you need a new plate to go with your shinny new GTI.

How I  the Interlagos seats and newfound roominess and features in the interior.

I'm getting the hyper yellow fog lights and the 20th AE GTI logo shown below...

The plates have disintegrated but the person at my local MTO said there was a bad batch from fall of 2000 when I received mine. I have sent a free replacement request via fax pending approval. Going to put smoked licence plate cover on the front with clear on the back. Have red trimmed/piping carpet mats and rubber Monster Mats (echoing the honeycomb front grill pattern) for Winter with red GTI logos too. LED tail lamps with rear fog will come once available later in the year.

You really need to splash out on a new number plate. Doesn't help the look of the new car. its a lovely looking motor. They drive nice. I've only had a MK1 and Mk3 Then I moved to Canada. The Mk1 had spring loaded gear box tricky to use as first. I missed my golfs. That MK5 TDI sure has been about a bit 300,000. should do hafe a mil though easly. Looks in good nic too.

Awesome, love the looks of the GTI, love the little rabbit badge as well!  And my favourite colour I think for that car, there is something hot about white hatches.

I actually saw a golf TDI just like yours (your ex TDI I guess)  the other day, with the rave alloys too.

The GTI looks really good. I don't normally like white cars but the GTI looks really good in white. So does the new rabbit. You definately chose the right colour.

Kinda cool to see the 'evolution' of VW so to speak with the old parked right beside the new. How things have changed. By the way, I know you probably haven't driven it much (or maybe you have), but how do you find the fuel consumption of the GTI so far? I heard that that was one of it's few let downs.

I've seen a few Golfs and Jettas with Rave alloys, but not many. There was a Beetle that came with them at no charge for a time, so seen a few more of them. They were/are one of VW's least expensive accessory wheels (I think even the 15" ones are more than the Rave 16"ers) but I happened to really like them. They weren't flat like many others (spokes are recessed at the edges, sticking out toward the middle but sunken in with the VW logo and bolts), looked very cool when spinning at slow speeds, and you could see thru to the brake disc well when looking at them at highway speeds. Was really happy with them and was glad I sprung for 'em.

I tell ya, don't know how people drive around in big vehicles. Notice a big difference in fuel economy versus the TDI, but that was rated for 50mpg city / 64mpg highway with the same 55L fuel tank, so with just about anything I bought I'd see a difference. GTI is rated at 28-30 city / 41 highway, which is not BAD for the engine, tire size, and weight (3,400lbs) of the car. With the first tank I had a range of 595kms (filled up when the low fuel light came on, calculated using the tripometer and distance to empty remaining). I'm half-way on my current tank and it's indicating 580kms (with more city driving). So, if it keeps up like this I'll be alright with it; hopefully once the engine is broken in it will get even better. Around 60-110km/h the fuel economy is really great in 5th and 6th gear (the instantaneous fuel economy readout is very neat), but any stab at the turbo really makes the consumption jump quick, so people that truely work the gears on the car and rev 'er up every chance they get won't be seeing brilliant fuel economy numbers, that's for sure. But with the way I drive (normally, with the odd stab at the throttle for kicks and passes) should be fine. I'll report back later once more kilos are on the odometer.

That can be arranged  ;D

Great pics of a great car.  Can't wait to go for a ride in it!  Love how you did the side/side of the two cars

I love the plaid on the seats, and they look very comfortable.

And of course, that cute little rabbit next to the GTI sign! Oooo, I love that little rabbit!  ;)

Very cool car!

We have cars in the same segment but each is very polar.

I am jealous of your abundant torque.

Thanks!

Truth be told, I really love the new Civic. Very modern, low, sleek, innovative, and fun. But, just not big enough inside for myself or rear passengers and I prefer a hatch so I went this route. The growing number of quality choices in this segment is nice to see (Civic Si, GTI, Cobalt SS S/C, RSX, Caliber SRT-4, MazdaSpeed3). I'll have to get my hands on an Si sometime and rev it up though.

Yesterday I installed NOKYA Hyper Yellow fog lights. They have a yellow tip, so even when off they reflect yellow in the lense.  8)

My Fast arrived yesterday.

Smells like PVC but much heavier than I thought it would be, and the slicked back ears remind me of one of my cats 'Frumples' - photos to come. I thought I would like the 'tee'd-off' retro tail best but now that I have him the 'bad boy' definitely is most fitting.

Fast is already 'installed' in the dash-top cubby  >:D
