How important is 0 to 60 time when buying a car
« on: July 10, 2006, 11:01:19 am »
O to 60 times. I don't think most people really care. Unless they are buying a GT/GTI/Super whizzo lux models and want to be a boy racer or there are a real car buff. But for people who are buying a non Sup-up saloon or hatchback its the last thing on their mind. I'm not buying that Corolla cause it doesn't do 0-60 under 8 Seconds. I think once you hit the Motorway and you speed-up to 60 its not even on your mind. I don't think I have ever once thought about how long It takes the car to get to 60. Oh dam it taken me 12 seconds. big deal. I think it more important in how car feels to drive than the 0-60 time.

So how important is 0-60 time when buying a car? Do non car buffs really car?

I'm not rich enough to care.  Even if I were rich enough, there are other things like responsivenes, handling (transient and steady-state), steering feel, tossability, and driver feedback that I'd care about more than 0-60 acceleration.

I care, it allows me more fredom on the road. If I want to get ahead of that lorrie before the parked car, I need a decent 0-60...but when I say decent I mean a sub 10 second time. For a city runabout that is the maximum.

Most magazines today agree that 50-75MPH times are more important anyway...

:iagree:  this is me as well.

0-100 kph is not a consideration on its own when buying a vehicle, it is the entire package.

Fuel economy, emergency reserve power, and top-gear highway acceleration are more important than 0-60 to me.

It's part of the package, but not the only thing. I would not want a vehicle with a 0-60 time of 20 secs, as it would likely be slow and ponderous in other driving aspects also (unless of course, it is a tank or farm truck).  ;) ;D

Under or at 10sec to get to 0-60 is fine for a commuter car. Passing power on the highway is more important, will test for that next time.

"The Drive:

Driving along the street, people get of your way in a hurry. I know, I know, I hear you. This is sounding more and more like the perfect commuter car for those braving the war-like rush-hour conditions that sometimes prevail along Highway One into town.

The big bus engine is governed to speed the 14.4 tonner to no more than 110 km/h on the highway. "Psst . . ." said the veteran Sewards, "it'll do almost 145 flat out." Never got to put that to the test, sadly."

Only 145 flat out!

80-120 is where I care.  Merging on the highway is where great acceleration can save you.  Many cars that I've driven seemed to be all about pulling away from a stoplight, but had the potential to scare the crap out of me on short onramps.  I don't care to drag race Bubba in his IROC next to me, but I'll be damned if I'm going to be stuck in a merge lane until the bitter end.

Doesn't matter if you can do 80-120 in a blink of an eye when you are stuck behind someone that doesn't know his right pedal from his left on the on ramp  >:(

I like a kick in the pants, but I don't care about numbers.  It's about how the car drives/feels.

That’s for sure!  Hate getting behind some car that can snap to 80 in 8-10 seconds but runs out of steam (or whatever) when trying merge at 120.

Both the Sienna and Pathy are good at merging and they are no drag racers   ;D

Handling is way more important to me. I feel little need to buy a car with a large V6/V8 engine.

Personally, 0-60 times are important for me because they are just one of a number of tools I would use to evaluate possible new sporty cars.

When I was looking into the SRT-4, I thought it's time was super important (~5.5 seconds) because it was faster than the majority of sports cars.  But then I came to my senses and bought a Civic.
