Oldest Continuous Use License Plate
« on: July 07, 2006, 04:25:50 pm »
I just realized the plate on my Pathfinder is the original from when BC went to the current design back in 1985 or 86.  It was originally used for promoting Expo86.  So my plat has been around, in continues use, for over 20 years   :o.

Anyone else with old plates?

It took me almost 20 years just to remember the letter/number combination   :rofl2:   :rofl2:

As long as the classification does not change, you can keep your plates and just put them on the new vehicle.

So mine have been on:
1985 Toyota Corolla
1986 Ford Bronco II
1989 Mercury Tracer
1989 Ford Bronco II
1996 Mercury Mystique
2002 Nissan Pathfinder

I got a new plate on my SAAb turbo in 1982, intended to keep it as long as I had that job, start date of which was turbo buying day.   Foolishly I was persuaded to chuck those plates in 2000. I have since wondered about getting the same plate back as a personal plate, but now I have retired why bother

I must have 30 pairs of old plates. I have had some real favourites.  Currently, I have no clue what plate is on what vehicle.  Hotel staff ask me to list my plate and I tell them I have no idea.  If it was stolen I couldn't tell the cops a thing other that for them to look it up for themselves.  The ETR toll road call centre lady was floored on how many plates their computer acquired and collated under my name. She thought it was a record.  I asked for a lifetime pass.

I've had mine since 1992.  The plate (only 1 per car in QC)  is on its third vehicle.  It will be 14 years old this December.  :D

I do not think that is possible, Seaside, as the plates up to at least 1983 were white letters on a blue background. In the mid-80s some time, the BC plate switched to blue letters on the white background with the centre flag as todays plate is. I know this as I have a picture taken in late 1983 with the blue plate clearly showing.  ???

Mine switched in either 1985 or 86.  I remember having the blue with white letters on the Corolla, then it got the current plates but I will be dammed if I can remember if it was 85 or 86.  I know it was February, as that was when all renewals happened in BC at that time.

LOL ovr50--no doubt you are right.  I vaguely recall now having to change plates because of something or other, even though I had the same vehicle.  Anyway, whenever that was I still have them. I'll check my vintage photos ;D When I bought my new car, the salesman was surprised that I'd want such scuffed-up plates on a new vehicle.  I just told him it was  'love thing' *sigh*.

I have no recollection at all, in the wild days of my youth in BC, of having a blue plate with white letters!  So, as AVT points out
Yup, you're busted on that one, Lass. :stick: ;D

Saffy--aaah.....that's a secret :rofl2:

...

Same with me, so I just told them it took me 20 years to remember the number.

So looks like we each have the same age of plate.  Must be a few more in BC.

Here is a great web site for the history of BC plates: http://www.bcpl8s.ca/Passenger-main.htm

From this site:

1979 - 1985
The brand new 1979 base! This particular style would last all of seven years, which is a very short period if one considers the life span of the flag graphic has been 16 years and counting! This series started with: AAA - KKJ, and experienced a variety of different dies. Position of the sticker box is also firmly established in the lower-center of the plates with this series.

1985 - 2001
The Flag Graphic. BC undertook a complete re-issue in time for the 1986 World's Fair held in Vancouver (as testified to by the validation sticker at right). The 'Beautiful' slogan is retained, now appearing across the top of the plate. The sticker box is still lower-center but is now debossed. And, of course, the highly stylized graphic of the provincial flag seperating the alpha-numeric serial format. This specific serial started in the L's and ended in the K's.

2001 - Present
ICBC has run out of the AAA-000 combinations! Apparently ICBC considered the option of re-issuing previously assigned, terminated licence plate numbers but decided to continue its "one person/one time" policy for assigning plates. To do this plates now come in the 000-AAA serial format. Unfortunately, the 'Flag Graphic' will be with us for a while yet.

You do not see it?  Saf is having problems seeing some of my pictures, and all I do is link to the actual picture.  So here is the link: http://www.bcpl8s.ca/images/86-01/BC91f.gif

You see the other two?

Tainman - I see it fine, but in your post, it says "unfortunely the flag graphic will be with us some time yet"? That sounds like you don't like it to me, and I wonder why, that's all.  ???
