Unless I'm mistaking, the Phaeton is still for sale in other markets.

Maybe....but I don't really care about other markets.  If you can't buy it here....

And the Rabbit is a great deal, yes, but there was a Golf CL that sold for around $18k not that long ago... so it's not like VW suddenly decided to lower the prices of the Rabbit... they've always been low!

And they should concentrate on that.  Stick to what you do best.  Offering value to consumers who are your existing target market.

And sure, $50K for a VW is pretty steep... but IMO, $50K for a VW makes a lot more sense than $60k for a fancy Pilot or $70k+ for a fancy Accord...

Seems like you're always on your own little path....but what you do with your $50K car, and what I do with my $60K car....to each his own.

But it would be a dog. That little 2.0 is a great engine but with 4motion added, the weight would turn it into a slug. It needs the V6.

Still at over $56,000 for a loaded up wagon there are just so many others around. Three years ago mine was $43 and 4motion topped out a little more than $45. That's a big increase for a motor and different style.

I doubt it would be a dog or slugish.
The Subary Legacy wagon uses a 2.5 with 175HP.
A4/A6 2.0T Quattro Avants, 325ixT/525ixT, no problem at all.

I recently purchased a  b5.5 model Passat wagon loaded (glx model).  If I was you i'd get the older model later model years with low km's .. much better value and imho a better looking vehicle

I like the new Passat, and think the exterior is put off nicely by larger alloys like on the tester, but the gap between 2.0T and VR6 pricing is far too big. You can't even option up a 2.0T to the price of the base VR6. Regardless, believe it or not I've seen more 3.6's on the road than even I would have believed. Sure, the 2.0T will outsell it the same as any other company's smaller engines tend to outsell the larger ones for fuel efficiency and price reasons, but the 3.6's are moving off the lots too. At least for the time being. Not many wagon competitors with the room of the Passat - Legacy's rear seat room is puny, the 3, 9-3 SC, A4, V50 etc are all smaller. The Volvo V70 is about the only direct competitor in my eyes if you actually need something roomy. Mazda6 comes close when comparing FWD's. I hope the rumoured 2.0T 4MOTION makes it this year to better compete with Legacy though - that'd be an excellent combo.

I considered the new Passat wagon as a replacement for my beloved PassatB5.5 wagon.

Here is why I didn't buy the B6 wagon:

1) No standard with the big engine and AWD.
2) Wheelbase too short for the length of the car. Awkward looking huge overhangs. Nasty. Even if it    handles better than the previous Passat it sure doesn't look it.
3) VW dealer experience. Amateurs.
4) The seats felt too flat. I am not sure if the better seats were offered in the 3.6 or not.

Sport seats are available on Sport Pkg in the US (there will be a 2.0T Sport Pak soon too) but not in Canada sadly. Huge package price, but no sport seats  Angry

I'd prefer your V70 R over this anyday myself.

Yeah but the V70R was another 8k over the overpriced 3.6 Passat. Oh well at least the Volvo dealer is close to my house. Grin

A very nice wagon but for the price a LGT MT5 Limited Wagon is a better alternative IMHO.

I don't believe Volvos are any more reliable than VWs are. Maybe a tiny bit better, but Volvos certainly aren't Lexus's...

And the 2.5T only develops a 208hp, hardly comparable to the Passat's 280hp engine. Even the T5 which starts at $50k only develops 257hp.

Any car that goes for the price of a Lexus should be reliable. My '99 V70 has 250k on the odo and still runs
perfectly. My brother sold his Volvo with 750k on the clock having done not more than regular service.
Toyota/Lexus "quality and reliabilty" are way overblown.

750K KM???
Impressive.

The old "real" Volvos and Mercedes, were way over engineered!

A friend of mine loves wagons.  Her son recently totalled her Volvo V70 AWD wagon, so she found herself wagon shopping.  She didn't return to Volvo thanks to a poor experience with CEL's and other electrical problems with her car.

She has a healthy budget, wanted decent power and a manny-tranny if possible.  Guess what?  She bought the Mazda 6 wagon.  Got a V-6, leather, all the goodies, etc. and paid $15K less than the nearest competitor.  Sure, she had to go without AWD, but with some good snowies, that 6 will be just fine in the winter.

Her final list of two?  Subaru Legacy and Mazda 6.  Why the Mazda?  Just 'cause she liked it better.  Purely subjective.  Also, the 6 is even better value than the Legacy and after several expensive-ish cars, she loved "saving money!"

I think we have a love connection.

How is it possible that after electricity has traveled through hundreds of miles of power line then hundreds of feet (or yards) of romex in our home, that changing the last three feet of wire with something exotic, expensive (cool looking, and packaged in a pricey box) is going to make a difference?
