BMW 1 coming to Canada?
« on: June 16, 2006, 11:49:25 pm »
Carguide (June).
Editor's response to a reader's letter (page 4):  "We've not had an opportunity to drive the 1 Series yet, though that will likely happen in the run-up to its introduction to Canada.  In the meantime, more sub-compact and micro cars are coming into this country all the time."

Saw one at the Vancouver Auto Show.  150 hp diesel...very nice package.

It just might come, but it will be more expensive than the A3 when equally equipped.

I think MB made a good move by bringing the B200 and B200T to Canada.
Audi might want to slot a A3 2.0 FSI with 150HP below the 2.0T, and add Quattro to the 2.0T.

BMW doesn't need a compact 5-door family hatchback.  There's obviously a lot of money to be made with this segment ... so BMW made the 1-series.  Even in Europe it's considered cramped and overpriced ... imagine what it's gonna be here ::) .  The goal for BMW is to offer a "cheaper" car to the public and it will probably lose some of their "prestige" in the process.

It's not very pretty and how much BMW-ness can you put in that thing?  Spend a little more money and get a decent 3-series or save a few thousands and go get a 4-door GTI (nevermind the A3  ;D).

Saw one at the Toronto Autoshow, looked great in red IMO, but may be overpriced.  Especially with a the 4 door GTI and A3 around.

I am with Clarkson and the lads on this one. It lacks most of what we have come to expect from BMW. You want a small Bimmer? Buy a Mini Cooper!

I liked the looks, but the car (at the Vancouver Auto Show) was locked, and there wasn't any information on the price.  If I remember correctly, the car was a display from one of the federal agencies (environment?).  They also had a SMART four door on display.

That would have been Transport Canada - they are always touting different transportation options. They also show them off regularly in the outdoor courtyard of their offices in Ottawa.

Too small. It's rwd so maybe some people might like it for the sake of rwd but it takes up too much room. Not to mention the saggy curve line that makes it look like a fat person sat on it. It's a good idea but it's too small and probably pricey. Why not get a Golf Rabbit or a GTI?

It will sell well to all the cube farm worker bees in the GTA who can’t quite afford to buy a 3 Series yet.

Just a heads up, I saw a white one parked on Georgia here in Vancouver about a week ago. It didn't have plates but had a permit in the window. Maybe closer than you think.

I don't know about Toronto but in Ottawa you see a 3-Series every 30 sec ... you see more of those than Civics.
