16" Civic Si AutoX rubber
« on: June 10, 2006, 07:01:27 pm »
Well I am planning on sliding on RSX rims on the front, mounting some race rubber.

stock tires are 215/45R17

I was thinking either 205/55/16 or 215/50/16 or 225/45/16

I was told the T1Rs from (toyo?) are good for dry, wet, and they won't need to be heated up to be effective such as the michilin pilots..

They were saying a treadwear of 200-240 is good.

They were saying it would be hundreds of dollars each tire.

Where is the most cost effective place to buy from?

Front only?  You'll have some horrible balance if you only replace the front tires!

Wider is better up to a certain point 225's should be ok.

FYI, Toyo T1Rs aren't "race" rubber. Toyo's R-compound tire is the RA-1.

my last time out I had a lot of front tire plough and wear, and almost no rear tire wear.

The pros are strong for only doing the fronts:
-I like a slight oversteer tendancy
-would only be for autocrossing; under 70km/h
-affordable
-the firmer sidewall on the fronts would be somewhat compensated by the 1 inch bigger rears

So the T1Rs aren't track rubber... what is good track rubber that can handle a damp track and is relatively cheap? - falcons, michilin pilots (expensive), BF goodrich KDWNT?

Sounds to me like you're just trying to go too fast. Any car will plough & eat its front tires if you throw it into a corner faster than the laws of physics allow. Slow in/fast out will keep the car balanced & allow all four tires to do their fair share of the work.

R-compounds on the front and all-seasons on the rear just sounds plain crazy, IMHO.

If you are looking for tires that you can drive to and from events on (in other words not R compound), Azenis RT-615 is what you are looking for. Probably one of if not the best "street" tire around that doubles as autoX tire. You can get 4 of these bad boys in 205/40R16  for C$ 144.95 at Tire Trends. They are one of the top tires used in SCCA street tire classes. They are also available in 225/50R16  and 215/45R16 but not listed on Tire trend's site.

I would like to buy from tire trends, but that 4X $144.95 = $579.8 quickly rises with a $52 shipping, $12.84 environment levy, $44.23 PST, $44.23 GST = $733.10, or a 26% increase in original costs, where as I could buy from Ebay/other for less. ( especially with our exchange rate )

I would suspect so, but I'd be more concerned about turning a fine-handling, nicely-balanced car into some kind of schizophrenic, split-personality Frankenstein's monster. That's just me, though.  ;)

Sounds like you may be in the lower mainland if you are paying PST. You are welcome to pick up at our warehouse and save the freight charges. If the 144.95 for the

If you are thinking of cost and only putting race/street tires on the front...I am in agreement with this being a bad idea. You will have serious over steer and have a very happy rear end. Anything you gain in dry grip will be lost in corners as you your rear will want to swing around on you.

The suggested RT-615 is a great street/track tire for those that dont want to sepnd too much and have a streetable tire. You will want to run them on all 4 corners. You might also consider the Hankook RS-2, which has gotten great reviews as well.

If too pricy you ight consider just running an inexpensive street performance tire to start and then deciding from there. If you want give us a call and we will try to offer some suggestions.

Thanks morty, but comming from Victoria it'd cost double the freight to pick up the tires via ferry.

Honestly I'm not doing autocrossing to be competitive in the ranking numbers, but rather to have a good time.  I wouldn't mind losing a few seconds for a slight oversteer tendancy - but from what I hear from you guys it will not be handleable by any means.

If you're going to do something, do it right.  You often hear about how it's a no-no to only use winter tires in the front or rear wheels.  I see what you want to do as something similar....too much grip onto one axle may create a dangerous situation on/off the track.  If it were me, I'd go with all 4's.  If money's tight, use the OEM tires, wear them out and by the time you do, hopefully you've got a few extra pennies saved to spring for all 4.

As for going with Tire Trends vs. eBay.  Sure TT costs more, but the warranty, and knowing you're getting a good new tire for each side of the car is worth a bit to me.  Going eBay is cheaper, but many people have been screwed by eBay sellers, and buying something that connects car to road is no minor matter.  Damaged tires or after sales support is nil on evil bay....I've never purchased anything on eBay....ever.  Not about to start now either.

You will HATE your car if you go with only 2 tires.  Guaranteed you will spin a few times then have less confidence which means you will go slower because you will not have confidence to push the car.  SiRCivic said, if you find you are plowing don't blame the  car blame the driver.  There are guys that drive Stock Golf VR6's heavy front end or other heavy fwd cars and they don't plow along.  You have to slow down.

Even my S2000 plows like mad if I go in too hot.

Please don't tell me that you can't afford four tires because you've gone and spent two grand on a set of electronically adjustable coilovers.  :'(

haha...

I do appreciate your input and I'm sure you guys know better than I what the reprocussions will be.

on the flip side, if I do do all fours, the rear tires will have next to no wear, allowing me to rotate and get double the usage outta 'em...

The rear tires will wear less that is for sure, and yes you should put the rears on the front and rotate OFTEN.

Tires and brakes (pads) are the first things I upgrade on any car.

Cheap out on tires? WTF?  :o
