24,400 HP at the wheels, all under the control of one person:

Pulling the hill out of Lillooet BC (north bound) a couple of weeks ago. 5 General Electric Dash 8's @ 4,000 hp each (the red, white and blue ones) and one GE Dash 9 @ 4,400 hp.

And this is on the low end for modern mainline trains

GE's U50 and U50C both had 5,000 hp. Made between 1963 and 1969.

And of course from Canada, the Montreal Locomotive Works M640, 4,000 hp:

Only one built, CP bought it.

I was thinking of the M640, because it was the first to get 4000 hp from a single engine. The U50 and DD40 had two diesels in them.

But not what you would call a successful venture, with only one made.

Needed GM and GE to come out with reliable and effective wheel slip control systems before high hp could be used on a regular basis, as well as the fuel economy side of high hp.

One thing GM was very good at was building excellent diesel-electric locomotives.

Beautiful locomotive - based on Alco 628/630 series...

My faves are these monsters from Sweden... 7200kw

They are being replaced by these... 10 800kw

Yes, WAS. Now it is GE that is the leader. GM even sold off its locomotive division last year rather than try to revive it.

Anything GM and Barrie will be along, just give him some time
