That's an interesting question and one I've never even thought to ask.
I have one more free oil change to come at the dealership which I will be getting done soon but after that I will do my own oil changes and I was planning to switch to synthetic at that time (there is a little over 100k kms on my RAV4).
I've read quite a bit about synthetic oils from plenty of different sources but nothing I have read before has made any mention of special oil filters for use with synthetic oil.
The filter is there to catch dirt and contaminants in the oil so I doubt there is any difference with regard to chemical properties of synthetics. The only issue that I think might be different is with regard to the longer drain intervals allowed by using synthetics. If you extend your oil and filter change intervals when using synthetic oil then maybe a normal filter would become full of dirt and contaminants before being changed allowing more dirt to continue circulating in the engine.

Maybe a filter designed for use with synthetic oil would have a higher capacity to hold dirt and contaminants.
This does however set my bull

detector off.

It could be a marketing ploy. Do these "special" synthetic oil filters cost more than regular ones do?
Trainman since you use your Pathfinder off road and in the bush a fair bit I think it might be wise in your case not to extend oil change intervals too much anyway by using the synthetic oil since more extreme vehicle usage necessitates shorter maintenance intervals, as I'm sure you already know. Just my $0.02.
