Special Oil Filter for Synthetic Oil?
« on: May 29, 2006, 12:21:39 am »
Canadian Tire has Quaker State synthetic oil on sale this week (6 l for $25).  They also have oil filters for synthetic oil.

This is my first use of synthetic oil and I am putting it into the Pathy as suggested by the dealer and my local shop, so would like to know if I need (or if it is better) to use this type of filter.

Thanks

???   That's an interesting question and one I've never even thought to ask.

I have one more free oil change to come at the dealership which I will be getting done soon but after that I will do my own oil changes and I was planning to switch to synthetic at that time (there is a little over 100k kms on my RAV4).

I've read quite a bit about synthetic oils from plenty of different sources but nothing I have read before has made any mention of special oil filters for use with synthetic oil.

The filter is there to catch dirt and contaminants in the oil so I doubt there is any difference with regard to chemical properties of synthetics. The only issue that I think might be different is with regard to the longer drain intervals allowed by using synthetics. If you extend your oil and filter change intervals when using synthetic oil then maybe a normal filter would become full of dirt and contaminants before being changed allowing more dirt to continue circulating in the engine.  ???   Maybe a filter designed for use with synthetic oil would have a higher capacity to hold dirt and contaminants.

This does however set my bull :censor: detector off.  :cp2:  :foil: It could be a marketing ploy. Do these "special" synthetic oil filters cost more than regular ones do?

Trainman since you use your Pathfinder off road and in the bush a fair bit I think it might be wise in your case not to extend oil change intervals too much anyway by using the synthetic oil since more extreme vehicle usage  necessitates shorter maintenance intervals, as I'm sure you already know. Just my $0.02.
To err is human, to blame it on someone else is even more human.

Thanks Wolfe, good thoughts there.

I was not planning on extending the oil changes.  Right now it is oil and filter every 5,000 km, fuel filter every 10,000, air filter every 12 months.

And my BS detector went off as well, so that is why I am asking.

Will see what tomorrows posting bring.

No problem Trainman.  ;D

I'm no authority on these things so take my coments with a grain of sand. I was just trying to exercise a little common sense.

I'm sure Barrie, Artic and others will have some useful comments.

Your fuel filter change interval seems very frequent is there bad gas out there in B.C.? (I may regret phrasing it this way, cue Saffy)

I am counting on them!

And yes, I had experiences with bad gas (that’s your cue Saffi   :D) but am considering going to an annual fuel filter change out as the problems have not happened for a while.

No, batteries not required, it vibrates all by itself when excited by BS   :-X    :rofl2:

Marketing hype. QS filters are made by FRAM. Both brands advertise "synthetic filters". They (FRAM XG/X2) have the premium media in comparison to their regular (inferior) filters.
FRAM's synthetic filters are of the same quality as Wix/NAPA Gold etc., but at the premium price.
Nothing wrong with "synthetic filters" except the price.

I'm glad you posted that QS is on sale.  Comes in a box of 6 right?

As for the oil filter, as mentioned, your local Napa dealer is probably your best bet.  Napa dealers are sometimes run out of shops delivering other services so the name "Napa" is not always evident.  Check your local phone listings under NAPA or go on line.  They have a few series of filters; Napa Gold being the best.

Yes, box of 6, but no rain checks   :'(

I use our local NAPA shop whenever I can and now have a NAPA Gold oil filter.  Change happens Friday @ 9:00 AM.

Thanks Artic, Saffi, yugrus and Wolfe for you input.  Saffi's post made excellent sense today!  Did not need my secret decoder ring     :rofl2:

If you dig deep enough you will find a Diesel engined oil filter that does fit your gas engine. They cost almost double the price but have almost the double amount of Filtering media inside them as well. Possibly this is how they are selling these filters under the syn name. More material inside of the cannistor as it makes sence to me for the extra money they may want for them.  :)

FYI if you have a PartsSource near you, they have 5.4L (4.4 + 1) on sale this week for $29.99.  Great deal.  5w30 or 10w30.  ;)  Picked some up for myself this afternoon.

You mean Mobil 1? I'll check tomorrow whether it is SM or still SL.
Speaking of synthetics, here in Canada we have a privilege of access to the very fine oil that Americans do not have. It is Esso Extra XD-3. This heavy duty oil exists as true PAO synthetics in 0w30 and 0w40, but there are other weights in non-synthetic flavor. It shows the same or better wear results in used oil analyses and has many other advantages over the oils we all used to. It is much thicker then M1 at operating temperature too.
The catch is that it is only available at Wal-Mart (sometimes, not everywhere) and at Esso bulk oil dealers. I've recently got my 4x4L box for about $80, taxes included...

Seems to be the case.  Owen Sound Walmart had it then dropped it a few months ago.  It's the best deal going unless you get the 6 pack of Quaker State for $24.00 occasionally at Crappy.
