Winter wheel clean-up
« on: May 22, 2006, 07:21:52 pm »
Finally found some time to clean my Winter wheels off the RX-8. I used a new product named Mothers Power Ball.
I was skeptical of it but found that it actually works well and saves your fingers and time.

PS. James, I got a new jack finally.

Do you realize that in about 40 years, we'll have thousands of old ladies running around with tattoos?

How long does the PowerBall last?   How old is that Black & Decker drill?   I have one like it from the 80's.

I thought that powerball thingy was for polishing.  Weren't you supposed to clean the wheels first so that you didn't turn yer balls all black?  ??? :o

Yeah...be careful of the rim job or else your balls shrivel and go black....they may even fall off if you aren't careful.   ;D

So, what do you do with the power ball when it turns black?  Can you still use it, or clean it, or do you have to replace it.

Jeffy, If yer balls aren't black you're not pushing hard enough. :P

The Powerball cleans up nicely with soap and water. See pic attached. It takes a couple of washes though. Wear seems imperceptible so my guess is that it will outlive the wheels. I used Mothers aluminium wheel cleaner as the polish.
Definitely a finger saver and works faster than I could have done by hand.

Dr. Spock, yes, that drill has been around the block. Still have the original box and paperwork for it.

Quick question T…..how was the spatter from the process? Did you have to clean up the walls after?

Good question Snowy,
I poured the polish on the ball and then rubbed the ball on the wheel for a bit to coat the surfaces to be polished then started the polishing with a slow speed (variable speed drill recommended I'd say) then worked up the rpm gradually. Using this process there was just a couple of spatters on the rubber sidewalls, maybe 1/2 dozen. By the time I started cleaning the lip the spatters just got wiped by the spinning ball. Other than your hands getting dirty I would say that you could clean the wheels with a suit on.
The only negative (other than the price) was that it was hard to get at tight crevices.

IF you can find one, we've been sold out since the day that sale started.  :)

Can the powerball be used as a polisher for paint, too?  In lieu of a proper orbital polisher?

Yes, it's a national sale.  They'll be happy to issue you a raincheck...  just make sure you get in tomorrow at the latest, as the sale ends Thursday at closing.
