dealer inventory
« on: May 10, 2006, 02:21:28 pm »
So suppose I'm dealing with dealer A but dealer B (who I don't want to deal with) has the vehicle I want.  Obviously dealer A should be able to get the vehicle from dealer B, but does anybody know how that works?

would dealer A have to buy the vehicle from dealer B at wholesale and then sell to me so I can still haggle on the original invoice price?   Is there just some admin fee that is extra?  ANy other "tricks" a dealer might try to pull in this scenario?

oh yeah, forgot to mention... only thing I can think of is some type of transportation or admin fee (to adjust their inventory and move it, but hell, I'd go get it...)

I've only had one dealer swap (1994 Golf) and that came from about 600 km away. There was no surcharge. Oh, and it came with a block heater I didn't want or need - no charge.  ;D

Usually Dealer A will trade a car on their lot for a car on Dealer B's lot that way no money needs to be exchanged (or very little)

The dealer usually doesn't "own" the cars on his lot until he sells them, so it's no big deal to trade one car for another from another dealer.

The dealer does not have to trade the car if they don't want. If they think they can sell it, they will keep it and sell it for profit.

If it's not a production restricted model, you'll have better luck trading. Likewise, if each dealer wants a car the other has. But if dealer B knows you're the customer dealer A is sourcing for, depending on the person calling the shots at dealer B, they may not give it up.

My MX5 was a dealer trade.  Luckily the dealership that had the car was willing to dump it (probably having a convertible on the lot in December was a good motivator for thme) and I (eventually) got my car without any additional fees or concerns.  If that dealership hadn't wanted to play, I'd have had to order one since it was the only one of its kind in the province at the time.  The only other one in the country was in Quebec, and it would have cost the dealership a shipping fee which would have then been passed on to me.

I bought once a new car with considerable incentive that ended up being a dealer trade from 750 KM and a different province. Dealer didn't charge me a thing to put it on a flatbed and bring it in. I was always amazed they didn't pass the transportation cost considering they were not making much on the sale.

There are some good dealers out there. Just gotta find them...

As a matter of interest, which manufacturers show "real time" dealer inventories online in Canada? I remember it was possible with Ford. Who else?

In my case, Dealer B didn't want to give Dealer A the car I wanted - they would have preferred that I hop 30km up the road and purchase it from them. We were near the end of the model year, and  it was one of only 2 cars remaining in the province with the trim package I wanted, in a colour I would accept. The alternate colours were really lame and it wasn't any wonder that there were still a half dozen sitting on the lot. Dealer B flat out refused. My car came from Dealer C roughly 400km away.  :-\ Poor sales guy was about to lose a sale...

We negotiated a firm sales price for a new Honda Accord then were told there would be a $600 surcharge for a car in our color choice because a dealer trade was required; $300 for transportation and $300 for the other dealer's profit.

We have been very happy with our Toyota Camry.

Well that's one route to go, but you could have ordered the car you wanted couldn't you?

Maybe they don't do that anymore. I have always ordered my cars because I usually don't want options that dealer ordered cars comes with but maybe that has changed? Anyone tried lately?

I had five business days to replace a company car. The Honda dealer exhausted four of the five. I made the deal with a Toronto Toyota dealer by telephone Friday morning. He had the new car prepped and ready to go when I arrived the next morning.

Of course you can order them. I have bought a few new cars over the years, starting with the '69 Mini Cooper. I have NEVER bought one "off the lot" yet. My cars have taken between 1 and 93 days to arrive.  ;D

Yup, you can still factory order but generally the dealer will try and do a trade to get the vehicle you want.

I used to do the paperwork for dealer trades at a dealership.  The dealership was in Hamilton and we would trade with dealers from Windsor to Ottawa and went as far north as Manitoulin Island.  We never used a flat bed for trades.

There were times when there would be orders (they came from the manufacturer at some level) that we could only do trades for a popular vehicle if we were getting a similar vehicle in return.

I think GM does for new cars (their pre-owned never works...in Ontario anyway). Infiniti system isn't reliable (shows car sold months before...)

Impressive response from the Toyota dealer. Feels good to give your business to a company that responsive and get things done.

Our Mystique came from another dealer.  No extra charges and it had to go on a ferry.  Of course, the original dealer was probably quite happy to get rid of it, it had sat on his lot for almost a year   :rofl2:  :rofl2:

yeah, GM has real-time inventory on their site as well.    I was just about all set to buy when I started this thread, not so sure anymore as there are a couple more models I'm looking at now.

I would order it but I figured if I walked in with a CCC invoice report and said "I will buy this car right now for this much money" and show him the invoice I'd get a better shot at an instock vechile which  was very close to what I wanted.  I didn't think they'd deal on a custom order as they'd want to clear out stock first.
