New old ride
« on: May 10, 2006, 12:16:39 pm »
Bought a 1990 Suzuki DR650. Very low miles. Seems to be in pretty good shape. It's the first year for this model. Kick start only, so I'll have a pretty good sized right leg by the end of the year. I may have to consider selling the old GT550 as garage space is at a premium!

Good looking DR. Did the previous owner cut out some seat foam on the front. It seems like too much saddle for a DR. Bike looks in good shape. DR's are generally good starters. Just make sure you follow a good starting procedure. Don't stab at the kicker like you would a 2-stroke. Find TDC and give the kick starter a nice smooth stroke. Does it have a decomp?

Keep 'em both.

That looks to be a nice looking DR.  I'd love to have a big thumper to bomb around with and hit some old dirt roads.
Internal combustion thrust I trust

The seat is supposed to be original. Looked to be ok to me, but the rack and original sidestand are missing. The first few years of the DR were quite a bit different from later ones.

It’s got fairly new Pirelli MT01 knobbies on it. It does have a decompression valve and starts ok except the choke detent is worn and will sometimes pop open. I’ve never had one of these Mikunis open before, hopefully it shouldn’t take too much to get sorted. Seems to be a very strong bike!
