squeaky 5speed shifter
« on: May 03, 2006, 11:19:18 am »
hi all, it's been a while!

ok, I've had my 2001 Mazda Protege 2.0 ES for a while now (a year at the end of June). Aside from my ongoing challenge with driving stick, it's been pretty good. Anyway, the shifter has gotten really squeaky and the dealer says they need to replace the bushings. $14 parts, $80 labour (of course!).

Just wondering: has anyone heard of this, and does it make sense?

thx

Yeah, my shifter was squeaking a little while ago, though it seems to have stopped.  I'm sure it will get noisier in the future.  It's reasonably common for the proteges.

The price seems a little high.  Also, I wouldn't be surprised if you could just lube the bushings instead of relpacing them.

The pieces with the little lube can beside them require lubrication.

how much do you think it should cost? I looked at that pdf you posted, which was neat. where's that from? I wouldn't really feel comfortable trying that myself, so I'll probably just get them to do it. They mentioned lubing when I asked about it, but once they had it in, they said bushings should be replaced.

anyway, thx for the reply

This is a fairly simple thing to do if your mechanic puts the vehicle on a hoist and hits it with something like Lubriplate which is a very good lubricating grease that stays where you put it. It comes in a spray can and is easy to apply. If you can wait until your next oil change then it would be a good time to have it done.  :)
