Tony's right, these kinds of vehicles continue to be very popular around the world.

They used to be called "tall wagons"...I've had one from new, a '94 Eagle Summit Wagon aka. Mitsubishi Expo.  There were many other similar vehicles available in Canada from the early 80s through the mid-90s from Nissan, Toyota, and Honda.  I believe all were available with AWD in their top trim level.

I've always found it interesting that the PT Cruiser is virtually the same dimensions as my Summit, tells me that Mitsu had it right all along.  Too bad the PT is overweight though, by 600-700lbs, or else I would consider getting one.

I hope it's a new class emerging.   Better fuel efficiency than larger vehices, hopefully nimble and fun to drive, versatile interior configurations.    I just hope that more come out with rear sliding doors...less chance of taking door dings.

Crossover, or mini-minivan, is a very sensible segment for those who need to haul ppl and cargoes without the size of a minivan.
