Honda crv maintenance costs
« on: April 16, 2006, 03:15:33 am »
Hi all,

I had almost decided to buy a 2006 Honda Crv
because of the 2.9% financing and $1000 cash
back, but researched the scheduled maintenance
today.

Unbelievable! Within 24 months it's over $860.
i.e.:

 * Replace engine oil and filter. *
    * Service front and rear brakes.
    * Rotate tires**, inspect for wear and adjust pressure.
    * Lubricate all hinges, locks, and latches with multipurpose grease.
    * Inspect tie rod ends, steering gear box and boots.
    * Inspect suspension components.
    * Inspect driveshaft boots.
    * Inspect and adjust drive belts.
    * Replace dust and pollen filter.
    * Replace air cleaner element.

   $367.88

Do any crv owners out there actually pay these prices?

The above is about a 1 hour job for a competent technician.
And being a low mileage driver it would be an inspection only
I'm sure so no adjustments should be necessary.

What are your thoughts?

I've got an Element, similar to the CRV. You can replace the cabin filters yourself and save a bunch. For the rest, do only what the manual tells you to do, not what the dealer recommends. An alternative would be to take the car to a certified mechanic and have them do the inspections necessary, keep the receipts and your should be fine...

All Honda's will have this same schedule, it's silly.  Get your oil changed and filters if they are required, they really charge a fortune for those other items that I would venture to guess they don't even do them!

Have the Honda dealer change the oil with in the 8K km mark and let them do the tranny service which is what?; 48K km.

That keeps you covered for the powertrain warranty.  Honda oil changes are not expensive.

Thanks for the responses.

What has me concerned is that the service I quoted wasn't from a dealer, but from Honda Canada.

I'm used to ignoring the dealers recommendations and just following the owners manual, but since it is Honda Canada it seems official.

http://www.honda.ca/Dealership/ServicePricing1.asp?PriceLevel=5&L=E&model=8&Trim=239&year=2006

Another thing is that the linked schedule is for 120 months and 240,000km and doesn't mention a transmission service or coolant change or break fluid change.

So how much more are they hiding?
There's nothing I hate worse than misinformation from a manufacturer.

I feel like I'm being scammed and I haven't even been to the dealership yet.

Think the "recommended" service intervals and items for other vehicles are any different?

You need to sharpen your internet inquiry skills. ::) ;) :)

http://www.honda.ca/HondaCA2006/YourHonda/HondaService/MaintCalcSched.asp?year=2006&modelid=8&minder=False&TrimID=239&L=E

Steve to My2cents:  For purposes of the powertrain warranty, which is what concerns most ppl, pay the extra 8 bucks and have the dealer change the oil prior to every 8,000 km.  That is really all you need to do at the dealer to insure your powertrain is covered.  Other than that, do it yourself or go down the street and see Gino.

Notes:
Use Genuine Honda 5W20 Motor Oil

Specific Additional Required Maintenance
Recommended KM/Months  Specific Additional Required Maintenance

120 mths/192k then every 60 mths/96k  Replace Coolant

96k then every 48k  Replace Automatic Transmission Fluid

36 mths/96,000 km  Replace Manual Transmission Fluid

48 mths/96,000 km  Replace Rear Differential Fluid

Every 36 mths  Replace Brake Fluid

84 mths/176,000 km  Replace Spark Plugs

Every 96,000 km  Inspect Spark Plugs, Lubricate Threads and Replace if Necessary

84 mths/176,000km  Inspect Valve Clearance, adjust if noisy

Well I'm getting closer to understanding what's required.

Honda's "recommended" services are the same as the dealer's
"recommended" services and not what is "required" in the
owner's manual.

Arcticsteve -

thanks for linking to the "required" services for fluid changes.

I think my internet search skills are pretty good.
Your link showed the same "recommended: services as mine
except without prices, which I think the common man would interpret as not much
more than a regular oil change and 21 point inspection that the local
shops do for $30 - $50 on every oil change.

The prices charged by the dealer and suppported by Honda are
simply a rip-off.

I don't mind paying the price for a tranny service or rad-flush when it's due,
but not $360 for an oil change.

I guess now I need to find an owners manual and find out what is actually "required".
Which is really what this post was about.

Then I can get on with reading the 405 pages in google about crv+pttr.

You wrote this previous to my response:

I gave you a link that indicates the REQUIRED service work to maintain the Honda powertrain warranty that you were unable to locate.  It is quite clear.  Fail to perform those services stated and your warranty is toast. It is by all accounts fairly lenient.

The only other requirement is regular oil changes typically prior to 8000 km.  That is it.  No other service work required to cover an owner on the big items; motor and tranny.

Arcticsteve-

I acknowledge that you provided me with a link to
the "required" "additional" maintenance and I already
thanked you for that.

And I'll take your word that the "only other requirement
is regular oil changes typically prior to 8000 km. That is
it. No other service work required to cover an owner on the big
items; motor and tranny."

That is what I was searching for and thanks to you the Crv is back in the
picture. (Unless I stumble onto other information that need clarification.)

Thanks again.

The car thing today is all about upselling dealer services; marketing value added services.  All the brands are grouping their service into these packages.  Its the new thing and it works from their prospective very well.  Most ppl do as they are told.  That and the availability of credit cards :)  makes for good business.

Do the dealer oil changes.  Personally I think the first tranny service at 96K is a little too long by about half. :o  I would just do it myself at 48K and not even mention it.

I also think the coolant flush at ten years is INSANE.  I would do that myself every 2 years but certainly at 5 years for anyone. Coolant is $15. :P

Honda inspects the plugs at 96k only because they don't want them to seize in the head.

Inspect valve clearance:  Always a good idea but I think those new Honda motors have self adjusting valves.  Besides they only look at them if they are noisy but I think that would be needed to be noted to continue the engine warranty.

Brake flush should be done every 3 years on any vehicle regardless of mileage.  Not doing so might interfere with the ABS pump warranty however rare that would be.

Essentially Hondas run themselves.

I beg to differ, some Hondas required RICE.  ;D

Just looked in my manual, it states that any "qualified service facility or skilled person" may do the service as long as records are kept and the maintenance log filled out. Also my manual has similar distances for the service intervals as what is listed on the Honda Canada website but the time is different. ie. 8000km/6months oil change interval not 8000km/4months hmmmmm.
