Xterra clutch problem
« on: April 16, 2006, 12:32:17 am »
My wife left on a U.S. road trip this morning in our 2000 Xterra. She just called from Idaho to tell me that she's having problems with the clutch.

She says there's a slight vibration and a loud grinding/whirring noise when the pedal is held to the floor. She says the clutch isn't slipping, and the transmission still shifts fine. Of course, this had to happen on a holiday weekend, so she won't be able to have a mechanic look at it tomorrow.

It's kind of hard to diagnose the problem over the phone, but it sounds to me like it's just a bearing going bad.

Assuming that's the case, any idea how long that bearing might last? I told her to keep driving the 600 kms to her destination, where she can have a mechanic look at it on Monday. Is that good advice, or do these things tend to go quickly once the problem starts?

With the info at hand it would be logical to suspect the release bearing.  It could last for thousands of highway miles.  Bumper to bumper city traffic could be a matter of a couple of hundred.

SIR; whats the mileage?

BTW, a Sachs clutch kit with bearing (see image) is about $170. US for the V6 and less for the 4 banger so you don't get ripped off.  That price would be from a parts store like Peep Boys.

Thanks for the price, Artic.

The Xterra's got 126,000 kms on it. I put about 300 kms on it last week, and everything seemed perfectly normal.  ???

Pretty much the whole trip should be Interstates & secondary highways, so hopefully she'll make it OK. Although, with the current exchange rate, it may just be cheaper to go ahead and replace it while she's down there.

I would agree if she can find a good shop then it would be cheaper, much cheaper maybe to get it done there with peace of mind for the trip home.  Dealer there would still be expensive.  Hopefully the ppl she is visiting will know a good mechanic.

It happens.  The bearing just reaches a point and gets real loud fast.

Just an update in case anyone's curious (and 'cause I hate it when people post stuff, then never follow up) ...

Once my wife got to her destination the clutch noise became intermittent, so she didn't bother to have a mechanic look at it.

From poking around on the net, I discovered that a clutch replacement is an especially labour-intensive job on the Xterra, and generally costs at least US$800-1,000 south of the border (some folks have even paid US$1,500). I thought about getting it replaced down there, but if the job was botched, it would be kind of hard to get any warranty work from 2,000 kms away. Besides, I'm sure my wife didn't want to spend her holiday in a mechanic's waiting room.

My wife's home now, and we had our trusted, local mechanic have a look at the X the other day. He agrees that it's a bad throwout bearing, and told us to expect the new clutch to cost $1,500 to $2,000. Ouch. Worst part is, he told us there's no way that the bearing should have failed so soon. He figures that it was probably installed slightly off-centre at the factory.

Hmm, now that I think about it, we've always had to push the clutch pedal very firmly to the floor in order to engage first gear. Just figured it was a minor quirk, and no big deal. Maybe it was a symptom of an improperly aligned bearing, and we should have had Nissan repair it while we were still under warranty.  :'(

Very difficult to get the dealership to fix something that is not broken. Them are the breaks.  :-[

Sorry to heard that,  glad your Mrs made the trip home safely.
