[Poll] Mud Guards
« on: April 14, 2006, 08:18:16 pm »
School of thought #1: mud guards protect the bottom edge of the fender from stone chips.

School of thought #2: mud guards do more harm than good because they trap dirt, salt and water.

Opinions?

When I got my Escort (ugh - and quiet Saffy), the rocker panels looked like they had been sandblasted. I had them repaired and set of mud guards installed. When I got rid of the beast 3 years later, the panels had no noticeable damage on them.  8)

My Pathfinder has mudflaps, has really helped, especially with all the gravel roads I drive on.

Note that with a lot of vehicles, the rear mudflaps may be attached to plastic rather than metal, so the "trapped salt and dirt causing rust" argument does not hold water.

We had our Mystique for 8 1/2 years with mudflaps and the lower part of the body was in very good shape when we got rid of it.

My primary reason to stick around here is to learn more about automobiles and related stuff that will effect my usage. I voted yes though.  ;D

They reduce stone chips and scratches on the sides of your car.  Rust is not a problem on the New Beetle since the fenders and wheel wells are plastic.  If you're worried about rust, hose out your mud flaps on a regular basis.

I'd rather have the mudguard hold all the leaves and crud than have it sprayed all over the lower rocker panel and rear bumper. It's easier to jet the mudguard than to scrub the bumper/rocker panel.

I've had vehicles with them and some without them. Overall, my opinion is that they do more good than harm. They definitely help in reducing stone chips on the fenders and rocker panels. If you wash your vehicle often and spray up underneath the wheel wells, the rusting/corrosion problem is not serious.

I do agree that they help... HOWEVER... they didn't do much good when my spouse ran over the fresh road paint in the coupe.  Damn stuff still hasn't come off.

Wouldn't have a car without 'em if they're available for that vehicle.

I use them and believe they do more good then harm. I only like the factory type molded ones though. They were the first things I put on my new pacifica. The flat, one size fits all flaps IMO are ugly.

Wots all the flap about !!!!.......so they stop a little dirt flying up on yer ROCKERS panels....I don't see 95% of the cars wif 'em as this poll would suggest (16 for 1 against).........
I voted FOR and have had a set in the shed for a year now.....maybe I should put them on ..NOW that the WEATHER IS GREAT!!!!! ::) :P...

P.s Do they affect the airflow(Cd) of the car/truck..................they don't seem to do much for the BLINDING F@CK that comes off the 18 wheelers in a rainstorm......worse than (and more frequent than" WHITEOUTS...... >:(..........
THERE IS NO CURE FOR "LOTUS"......ONLY TREATMENT.....

Yeabut... people on this here forum know more about cars than the general population. That's my hope, anyway.

Thanks for responses, everyone.

Ever try to remove tar from your rocker panels? Not a fun job.Another reason to install mudguards cuts down on the detailing you have to do
to the vehicle. They could be called ugly to some but tar and paint chips are uglier.

I have mud flaps on both vehicles.  Do they detract to the overall look of the vehicle?  Possibly so.  But I don't care.  I like 'em for the pros mentioned above.

If I had a 911, I'd still consider installing a set on it.
