Removing tires
« on: April 01, 2006, 09:47:18 pm »
Just wanted to know what if it makes a difference if you jack up the car and do 1 tire at a time (Because  only one side is lifted, does this cause tire removal to be very difficult), or raise the car from the centre and do front and rear. ( Since front or Back is now equally level does this make tire removal easier.)
Another reason for my question is that I was not able to remove my snow tire when I jacked up the car from one side.

Thanks in Advance

No difference.

Give it a whack with another tire.

Not entirely sure what you're getting at here, but you are loosening the lug nuts before you jack up the vehicle, right?

It's much easier to break the lug nuts free when the weight of the vehicle is on the tires, rather than when the wheel is spinning freely up in the air and the car is perched precariously on the jack.

Yes all the lug nuts were taken off, the wheel is stuck on the hub, and not too much luck after kicking it from side to side.

Ok then, kick it harder.  ;)

Thanks for the link. I guess back to the kicking and see if my neighbours have a slede hammer.

Yes, on hub centric wheels especially alloys use a TINY smear of antisieze on the hub.   Can tire sell the grey coloured  stuff and the copper coloured stuff is available at other places.  A can/tube is more than a lifetimes supply. Dont use very much!  a one fingertip smear around is all you need

Guys the sledge hammer was awesome.  Put some wood against the tire and 1 slow swing did the trick.

There wasn't any need in hammering it. You just take off all nuts and then lower the car until the wheel pops out of the hub. There wasn't a single wheel that wouldn't come off in my experience, even in extreme cold.

I tried that as well, only the front came off ( Mazda5) and the back would not, even tried 4 to 5 times.  Hammer was the only answer for me on this one.

That's because you never experienced my old BMW.  Try changing a tire at the side of the highway when it's seized on good and tight.  $%#@!!!!  Had to be flat-bedded to the tire shop where they gave it a good solid whack with the sledge to break it free.

Most European cars don't recommend tire rotation in my experience.

Not what I find
It depends on if your tires are staggered or not
The worst thing about the BMW is using bolts instead of studs

'Twas not recommended for my BMW, or my Audi if I recall correctly and I remember the Saab dealer  telling my dad that Saab suggests not doing it.

Saab dealer is not Saab, in fact, many of them know squat about cars they sell...
At least Saab owner's manual (9-3) lists tire rotation as a required procedure. It is always better to read then hear.

Good point.  For me however, when the car's under warranty and the servicing is being done by the dealer, I'll stick to what they tell me.

Bolts aren't that bad as long as your have hub centric wheels.   My Euro recommend rotating front to back straight.  My ex-Japanese car recommended a different rotation pattern.   As always, read your owner's or service manual.
