Selling my car
« on: March 29, 2006, 08:12:17 pm »
Hey all,

I would like to sell my car, and would like some advice on how to proceed. I've never sold a car before and am not sure if there are typical things that should be done beforehand. Is there a FAQ for selling on this forum (couldn't find one). Some questions:

 - Any paperwork / other things I need to take care of before selling?
 - How do I decide how to price the car?
 - Where are good places to advertize?

PS: The car is a 2002 Audi A4 1.8T in perfect condition with 68k. Includes leather, sunroof, tiptronic, new winter tires on rims. Selling it because I've moved in with my girlfriend and we don't need two cars.

Thanks!

Please fill in your profile for your location this will help answer any questions.

That is a great idea you have to have an FAQ, we would need to put that together for each province for some information.

Ontario:
You need the Used Vehicle Sellers package it is $20 from the license office it will list the history of the vehicle.
If you choose to sell your car safetied and e-tested you will need these, the E-test is good for 1 year so this can be done right away, the safety is only good for 39 days or something similar (I'm sure articsteve would know), so this might be best left to once you have a serious buyer.

- Price I would use autotrader to guage as well as blackbook and redbook, you can get a redbook value from the library this value should also be listed in the Used Vehicle Sellers package.

- Advertise in your local paper / autotrader, billboards werever you want autotrader is pretty much the standard.

If you're in NB, put an ad in the Autotrader, but check it when it appears, for typos.  You don't need to do anything else, but I'd recommend that when you sell it, go with the buyer to SNB to change the registration over, because no matter what, in the eyes of the gov't, it's your car until the registration is changed, and if the buyer racks up tickets etc before he changes the registration, they'll be YOUR problem.

Thanks for the advice!

I've now filled in my profile. I'm in Montreal, Quebec. I'm guessing that, as usual, this makes things more complicated? :)

Actually QC is even easier I'm sure someone can chime in and help you out.  But from how I understand it you do not need a safety for a car that is plated in QC, so you can just sell it and be done with it in QC.
