2006 Forester XS demo
« on: March 21, 2006, 07:52:16 pm »
Hi - I am still trying to figure out which way to go between a 2006 Forester 2.5XS or a Honda CR-V.

Our only Subaru dealership here has a Forester demo with 6000km. They will take $.10/km off and apparently have some room to bargin but I really have no idea where to begin. The MSRP is 32,395.00 on the automatic XS. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I've been reading other posts on demos and whether to pay PDI on a demo - essentially a used car I know but the dealership does consider it new. Some threads have said to try for 15% off! Is that reasonable or crazy talk?

I always suggest to ignore the demo and work at buying the new one as cheap as possible first. Then offer to buy the demo for less.

Most dealers will sell demos with 5-10,000 km at their cost. So the only thing you are saving is the dealer profit, which is usually 3-4%. That's not enough of a savings for me. But, it's your money. You decide.

Call another Subuaru dealer, and tell them you have a  2006 Forester 2.5XS (paid for , nothing owing on it) with 6,000km. But you just do not like the vehicle and want to sell it. You will be shocked at what the dealership will offer you.

Tell the dealership  you will take $.10/km off  and they will  at you.

.10c / km   That's peanuts, I'm with CarCost Pres on this one.  I was probably the one that said 15% before ;)

I don't see the value in buying a used car with 6000 km on for only a few hundred savings, it should be a few thousand at least.

Just for interest sake

a 2005 XS with 6000km on it Black books for 25,500

Its a used car. Can't be any more clear. a few 100 KMs OK but 6000KM is USED. It should have already had its first service. Its more than 1/4 of a year driving.

Some dealers I have talked to have said they get a rebate from factory to help them get rid of the demo.I can't say how much it might be here but if you are interested in this you'd better be looking at below invoice.

10 per Km off?

Sure Invoice minus 1500 minus 10 per KM (600) off might sound OK.

This might be a fun if anyone could ever do it. Take the "demo" for a test drive. Take your plates with you. Put them on and take out any info that indicates its a demo. Take it to some reputaple used car place and offer to seel it (moving out of country , getting company car or some other reasonable excuse). see what they offer you.

gaurentee its a lot less than 600 off.

I'd offer them $26,000 and wouldn't pay more than $27,000.  It's not a "demo" but indeed a used car, and wouldn't pay the new price.  If they say no, move on.  For $600 discount, just buy a new one with <100kms on the odo.
No place I'd rather be...

Update on our Subaru experience:

Thanks for all the advice! We did go to Subaru and test drove the demo. You could feel that it wasn't quite as nice as the brand new one we drove the week before so we thought we might have some room to bargin.

Not at all - they wouldn't budge on anything. Basically wanted full price minus the km. They did raise the discount for the km (which were actually 4500) to $1000. We both thought that the car smelt like smoke - they said no one would dare smoke in a demo, that they really take great care of their vehicles - even though the demo was never undercoated and has been driven for 3 months on incredibley salty and sandy streets. I guess they wouldn't want to put any extra money into a demo but they seemed to make a few points about how well it's been maintained and how gently it has been driven.

Didn't care to negotiate on anything else. We thought they would at least look at our trade-in (in fact we set up an appointment just for that reason) but nobody even looked at it or took it for a drive, they just offered us mid-black book. It was pretty discouraging and even though I like the Subaru Forester I don't think we feel like even going back there for a new one in the future.

Maybe it's because they are the only Subaru dealership in our City? I don't know how it works?

Wanda.

I find this not an unusual experience when its the one and only dealer in the City (or when there are 2 but owned by the same people)

If you want a subaru they figure you either need to buy from them or drive a long long way.

We owned a subaru and found many good things about it but when it came time to buy another car the pricing, finance/lease rates and general buying expereince was a big factor in why we did not get another.

You are smart to walk away. How far away are the other subaru dealers. You might want to get some documetation like APA CC cost reports and negotiate with another dealer for a new one at another dealer. otherwise it sounds like you will either have a difficult negotiation or be forced to consider alternate brands.

If it's not too far a drive for you, I'd consider going to a different Subie dealership, even if it's out of town.  An extra hour or two of driving invested could mean a thousand bucks or so in your pocket if the local dealership isn't willing to play.  Perhaps you could look up some of the other dealerships online and call the next closest one, make the Sales Manager and offer over the phone and tell them you'll be down later that day to sign the papers if it's accepted.

I believe Snowman on this forum has been to 3 different dealerships to deal his three different Subies.  They're great cars and worth fighting for!  If we can just sell my wife's Civic, we'll be working our magic on making a deal on a new Subie wagon too.

I don't think it's worth the fight for us - unfortunately we are in Manitoba – only one dealership in the province. I think we'll be looking into something else - we liked the Honda CR-V as well - and there are 6 dealerships in the province so maybe that makes a difference.

I have tried dealing with that dealer in Winnipeg. They are out to lunch & won,t knock a dime off MSRP. I have wanted to drive a subie but they make the buying process impossible.

:o  Ouch!  Only one Subie dealer in the province?  Crapiola!

If you really like the vehicle, try negotiating by e-mail/fax to the ones nearest you, even if it's in another province.  Some people think it's not worth a bother, but if you don't try you won't know.  And e-mails don't cost you a cent.  If you actually have a good offer, just make sure you have an agreement in writing (done by fax for signatures) so that you don't end up with a nasty surprise!

Or the CR-V may end up being less trouble.

Not much you can do.  It's only normal for a dealer selling any line of vehicle, motorcycle, atv, whatever, to hold firm on the price when there is no competition.

You don't pay freight or PDI on dealer demos ever. I would say demos are treated worse than what an average new car owner that spends 30k plus on a new car treats theirs.

Only 6 Honda dealers in the province doesn't sound to competitive either.  I don't follow SUVs but CRVs might be changing soon.  If your considering an 06 CRV get the EX model. :)

Apart from the oil consumption problem I got with both of mine, I found them actually quite good for the money I paid.  Enough space, low MSRP, very fuel efficient (700+ kms on 42L of gas is good by my standards)...

Hey, whats an oil consumption problem on a new car anyways.  ::) :P

Honestly, I find it just amazing Saturn still exists. Maybe if GM does tank then it will die in peace.

I don't know if that helps in your case, but I've spent over 3 months negotiating my Forester - covered two local dealerships and even went to Calgary. After I've got the numbers and "best deals" from all of them, I was glad my local dealer went an extra mile for my business. Forester is an excellent vehicle, I donno how people even compare driving Forester and CRV. I would go out of  province to get the best deal on Subie cause it is simply worth it ;)
