I have an 02 LX Civic and in need of new front struts.

Can someone recommend an aftermarket manufacturer and an installer in the Vancouver area?

Whats the problem? Are they making noise? You need the inserts or an entire assembly?

Sorry, don't know Vancouver but somewhere their will be a good indy Honda shop, although struts are pretty basic stuff.

I have confirmed with Vancouver Honda that they need replacing.

Now they are knocking when going over bumps and the handling is poor.

I will need to replace the entire strut assembly.

I will look into an Indy Honda shop.

Well if you find a good indy Honda shop they may have some ideas for you because those struts were problems and you don't want to put the same type back in.

How do you know that?  Because a Honda dealer said so?  They all say that.  Its more money for them and it's faster.

My mom has a 2001 EL with 12K on it and around 8K the left front started making a noise.  Depends on the bump and where the wheel direction is at.  I've done a bit of reading on it and I think like some it is a function of the main spring which is not replaced when you get a new entire strut.

I'm going to tighten down the insert (shock) and see if that helps.

If I were you I'd go for two inserts only, but it depends on your mileage and prices between the insert only and the whole thing.

It could also be your strut mount or bearing.  But someone who does little else than Honda should know the score on this problematic suspension.

After 2002 Honda changed something regarding the strut.

I check out http://www.7thgencivic.com often for my information. It is a well known problem with this generation.

My mileage is currrently at 97,000 km. I noticed them clicking and clunking occasionaly at 60,000km. Took them in to Honda and they said no problem with the struts. The problem became more noticable at 90,000km. Take it in and they say replace them but out of warrantee. Ok....

I am researching local Honda aftermarket Indy Shop as suggested. Thank you.

This is the response from David at GarageFive in Richmond (total cost $830 plus taxes):

I can get you KYB AGX series shocks for the front/rear  These are direct
replacements for your car, they are not inserts like many brands out there
(inserts = modifiying stock strut housing) I recommend changing all four on
the car at the same time.
With the KYB AGX's, the shock's dampening can be adjusted.  These shocks
also work well with lowering springs.

The front shocks are $210 cad plus taxes each.
The rear shocks are $155 cad plus taxes each.
Install on the shocks are $100 cad plus taxes.

I have these instock.  Just need to book an appointment when you are ready.

Update on pricing and brands from David at GarageFive:

KYB R-2 or Tokico Blues are both non-adjustable and fine for stock replacement shocks.

KYB GR-2 $140 for each front / $110 for each rear.

Tokico Blues $180 for each front / $110 for each rear.

From the 7thgen civic site most recommend the Blues.

I think that is the way to go. Checked online for pricing and these are competitive.

Yes, those AGX front struts are the top of the line and the price of $210. cdn is excellent.  I bet the dealer would have nailed you for more than $210 on the regular ones, that appear to retail for a little more than 1/2 than the AGXs.

That price is right on.  These guys must get a good deal on them wholesale because that is a very competitive price.

That's a great price although the rears are much quicker.

The purists always say that.  It's more a question of money than preference.

You certainly found yourself the right place.  If you get the opportunity to probe these guy's minds could you ask for specific detail on what went wrong with the 01/02 Civic struts.  What part of the set up do they think failed.  I can't find a definitive answer on that.

The KYB link didn't work for me so maybe you know what these struts and rear shocks look like for the 02 Civic, but I'll post them anyways.  Below are the AGX

So you have decided on the happy medium.   If it were me, being my cheap self, I'd get the front DR-2 for $280. plus install which is probably $80. and then tax which would bring the whole thing to around $400.

Thanks for the link, but I have read all those.  Many ppl on those forums are assuming that the insert pistons leaked.  You know one guy says it on one forum and then it spreads as it seems logical, but it isn't usually the case with struts at very low mileages.   It is more than that I believe.  Like I mentioned my mom's EL started at 8 km or after the 3 rd year.  There is no leakage. I think it is the actual coil making noise depending on load and position.

You saved yourself  a ton of money and will have a superior product in contrast to those ppl that slog into their "trusty" dealer like sheep going to slaughter and then get a good ass ..........
