Stinky is back in storage until next winter
« on: March 11, 2006, 04:09:17 pm »
Our trusty hunk of junk of a slush and slide car is back in storage for another season till next winter. It has over 200,000 miles on the clock and almost burns as much oil as it does gas. We should be able to get another season or 2 of abuse out of it. ;D

slush, slip and slide ............  ;D

runwhatyabrung , wing, a question for you 2:

would a rwd car be easier to control (in reasonable speed) than a fwd car on hard snow / slippery surface?

RWD Easier ?? depends on the driver,
RWD faster ??? no!
RWD more fun to drive ?? absolutelly

In all honesty, I'd prefer having a slower RWD car than a fast FWD car. They are just that more fun and that is what I prefer. In all the events I have seen the fastest RWD car could barely keep up with the slowest FWD. And that is having good RWD drivers too.

I'm with run, RWD I don't think would be easier, it would be easier to rotate around some of the 180 degree corners we have but it would be slower, certainly more fun, but I don't think easier, the FWD you basically mash it and go

:iagree: Having learned to drive when virtually all cars were RWD, I have to agree with both of you. One of the reasons FWD caught on was that it was much easier for the driver of "limited skill" to drive in winter conditions. RWD is definitely more THRILLING to drive hard on ice and snow. On a closed course it is more fun too. On a busy city street, I'm not sure I would agree that it meets MY definition of being more FUN.  :-\ ;D

If RWD cars are slower than FWD, why are BMWs RWD? Are RWD cars more refined, or can they accelerate faster?

RWD is slower on snow and ice, not on dry land.  And BMW's are built for speed they are built for handling.........well they once were now I would say they are built for snobbing around.

On hard packed snow, RWD goes faster sideways than straightforward.  Hard to get initial traction, have to wait very very patiently for the tires to get enough traction to start acceleration. You can do a beautiful rotation of the car, kinda hard to continue that momentum in a forward direction right after.
