New car advice for a friend
« on: March 08, 2006, 04:12:44 pm »
A good friend of mine who has very little idea about cars needs to buy a new car and wants some advice from me.
He drives about 20kms one way to work and has a wife a 8 month old baby and his parents also live with him too..
He wants a car which will
1) will have enough leg room and hip room to accomodate the child seat and the parents on the back. The parents are a little on the heavy side (say about 160)
2) He will run the car to the gound (atleast 10-15 yrs) so he wants absolute reliability, it should be like a appliance for him, performance, bhp etc dosent matter to him
3) because of 2) he does not care about the resale value
4) He likes Auto and something will all of electronic bells and whistles
5) He does not care about the insurance cost
6) He does not care about fuel economy
7)His budget is ideally 25-28k on road and no way he is going over 30k

What do you think is a good car for him. I would think the back seat of the CIVIC will be too small for Baby seat+parents+long drive

Simply 'NO' for any compact car, none have enough room to fit a child seat and fit two good sized adults in the back. A 4-Cyl Midsize will suit him better.  Hyundai Sonata 4-Cyl should fit the bill.

Therefore the only logical choice is a Camry LE.  My son has a 93 with 313,000 and it just purrs, the mechanic that looks after it has 2 of them, 1 with 420,000 and the other with 578,000.  That's a Camry for ya!

Both parents in the back?  Who's driving?  Most cars will be cramped with a baby seat and 2 rear passengers.

Minivan, My condolences in advance for the reliability issues with one for under $30k. It will have to be Domestic.

Mini van it is.  No way can you get two adults AND a car seat across on one seat.  Can not be done in the rear seat of our Sienna (I know, trust me  ;D).

Maybe Mazda 5 but check out the leg room of the back row first or how easy it is to get to the kid.

Could try the Kia van, may be in the price range.

Or any domestic  :hurl: .  Or maybe Mazda MPV?

You can fit the baby seat in the middle of the 2nd row of the MDX and still have room for 2 adults.  It's a little squished but still doable and fairly comfortable.

In my Corolla, with the booster seat slightly off the centre, one adult can sit and a thin teenager fits on the other side, its not comfortable. A midsize car could work, but he will have to test these.

Malibu MAXX might be an option.    A cute-ute will probably be the best idea.  We easily fit our car-seat, grand-parents (mother in law is about 200 lbs, father in law about 170-ish) and the gear in the back of our VUE.

Good option if you do not want the extra passengers to hang around!   ;D
