Redesigned Chevy Tahoe
« on: March 03, 2006, 09:06:43 am »
Motorweek did a spot on the redesigned Chevy Tahoe.  It received rave reviews and I myself, not being an SUV person, am even impressed.

From the looks of it Chevy has gone all out with this one using higher quality plastics, excellent fit and finish, well designed controls etc.  I truly hope this is a success for them.

I am blown away by GM's new full size SUVs and upcoming trucks. Only thing I see is that they're lacking some rear seat leg room and even a bit of head room for such a large vehicle. Otherwise, exceptional.

Saw a white one on the streets....it's miles ahead of the previous one.  Very good looking front end.  Sharper lines too.

  The Chevy Tahoe and GMC’s Yukon have performed well in Consumer Reports reliability ratings and they are both recommended. The current platform was dated and this new one looks first rate. I like the new styling and for people needing a full sized “real” SUV this is at the top of the heap.

But why why why a 4-speed automatic???  :banghead:

GM used to be the King for automatic transmissions. Now they are falling behind everyone.

I also read the fuel economy is no where near the official ratings -big surprise you are going to say- and is closer to 14 mpg US which is no better than the Hemi. No doubt a 5, 6 or 7-speed (yes, Big3 are all working on a 6 or 7 speed autos) trans would be very beneficial.

With 340 lb*ft of torque, I don't really see having only four gears as a huge issue. Seems like a reasonable way to save a few bucks on the base models, IMO. Besides, aren't the Denalis and Escalades coming with six-speed boxes?

Overall, the new design looks great. I drive a previous-generation Denali & Yukon XL quite a bit, and while they're nice vehicles, I'm not crazy about the dated interior design, leather that looks, feels and smells just like vinyl, and the unacceptable amount of squeaks and rattles for vehicles with less than 100,000 kms on the clock.

Sounds like GM has a winner with the new one. While I won't be in the market to purchase one, I'm definitely hoping that the boss picks up a couple of used 2007 Denalis when they start to come in off-lease in a couple of years.  8)

As a former owner of a Suburban ( '96 with the 454 in it) and an Avalanche I have high hopes the new one is better and I also wish the base models had the six speed. Maybe this fall they will extend the trannies across the line to help with the perception of tying to save the fuels of the world.

Saw the new Burb in black at the Toronto show and I am impressed although would more likely settle for the Tahoe size - if I go back. It's tempting

My issue is not with a lack of performance, it's all about efficiencies though more gears do translate into better driveability and performance. IMO it is simply not acceptable to release new 2007 products with 4 speed automatic. Chrysler products have 5 speed auto and Ford's have 6-speed.

At last, only the Caddy has the 6 speed. GMC Yukon, which doesn't appear to sold the Denali in Canada as it is MIA from GM Canada website, also use the 4-speed.

saw a Denali at the dealer on Wednesday
and most of person driving is under 80kmph, so having a 6 speed will not help efficiency anyway

I disagree.  For the majority of people, most driving is done at or above 80 km/hr.

Majority of people live in big cities, and spend most of their time in stop & go traffic.

Many people who populate the big cities do not own a car.   :P

 :o

Too true... :rofl2:

Having more gears allows the engine to operate with the engine RPM in the 'sweet spot' of the powerband.  This not only improves performance, but also fuel economy.  I assume that even at lower speeds, extra gears would increase fuel economy.   ;)
