Drive-In Theaters
« on: March 02, 2006, 09:18:35 pm »
Have not been to a Drive-In Theater since …. 1998 …. When an adjacent Chemical Plant on the out-skirt of Calgary caught fire and burned down everything close to it. The theater wasn't rebuild after that. The wife and I used to enjoy going to the Drive-In Theaters very much, for many good reasons, including the ability to bringing our own snacks and drinks.

Is there still a Drive-In Theater operating somewhere in Canada? Any good stories to share?  :)

Bid Island Drive-in, Flin Flon Manitoba. When I lived there back in the early to mid ‘90’s I went there because there were no theatres in Flin Flon. Unfortunately due to the latitude and the summer months it was bright out close to midnight, many late nights. I was single for a brief peopid and I would go out on dates there, good times.

None here anymore.

Good stories? Well, I did see my first James Bond movie at a drive-in. It was "Thunderball" (1965). The rest of the story is not suitable for this forum.  :-[ :-[

I also saw "The Italian Job" - the original - while sitting in my 1969 Mini Cooper. I got (or at least the car did) some interesting looks.  ;D

It's been awhile there was one in Ingleside (about 1 hour south of Ottawa).  I use to go when I was in High School I'm not sure if it is still around.

I think there is one north of Armstrong, just south of Enderby (all of which are north a bit from Vernon, BC). It is on native land and operates only in the summer months. I am not aware of any others these days. But, yes, they do bring back memories..... :o 8)

There is one in upper Stoney Creek just off Centennial Parkway called the Starlite. There's also the Canview4 just outside Fonthill.

London area is down to one now with 2-3 screens. The old Passion Pitt, Swapping Spit evening out at the movies. As a young man I remember it well. 8-10 of us in the trunk and 2 folks up front. They would come around with the OPP looking to see your ticket. Everybody always threw them away so they couldn't prove anything as to who paid and who didn't. Had some good times at the all-nighters back then. Scary Movies until the Sun came up or you were sober enough to drive home.  :) :) :rofl2:

Where I'm from in NB, there are like 4 or 5 operating in the summer in the surrounding areas. They vary from crappy to half-decent  :rofl2: ... and most of the movies are in French because they are situated in the Acadian Peninsula.

There's like 3 or 4 drive-ins in the Ottawa region but they're all on the Quebec side I think.  ???

??? ??? ??? Really?  Huh.  I had no idea.  There used to be one not far from the house where I grew up just outside Brantford.  Sometimes my buddy and I would sneak down and watch for a bit.  Kinda sucked without sound.

Never been to a drive in otherwise.

I always wondered how car batteries don't die if you've got to use the radio as your soundtrack for the movie.  Two hours on "accessory" has got to drain it pretty good, no?

There's one in Kentville I believe. They're not really my thing, but it's cool that they're still around.

I remember going to the drive-in outside of Trenton as a child to see a double (or triple?) bill.  The only movie I remember was one of the Mad Max series...the one with Tina Turner.
