Make Celine Dion smoke a few cigarettes near the leaky tanks.  Just to make sure!  ;)

Hmmmmm a buddy of mine with a Murano had a leaf spring go though his tank while his wife was driving. It was quite the scene, it cost him $1200 to replace and Nissan did nothing for him. I have sent him a link. He will call right away if I know him well enough.

Thanks for the link :)

All the more reason for me to convince a co-worker of mine to not buy one. I'll pass that link along to him too.

I have not seen nor heard anything in the past 10 months that says I made the wrong choice taking the Highlander over the Murano. I'm pleased.  ;D

What vehicle did the offending leaf spring come from? AFAIK, the Murano has a coil-spring suspension  ???.

your link is not working...kinda curious what the story is about especially since you're discussing the murano (what's a leaf spring?)

The leaf spring was road debris, probably from some decaying domestic pee cup.

That's changes things a bit. Why should Nissan do anything? It wasn't a Murano defect nor a warranty item. It was a road incident that is more likely the insurance cos problem. Nissan is not involved here IMO.  ???

In the People’s Republic of Ontario when you hit road debris it is your fault. If a chunk of something falls off a truck and hits the road first, too bad. That is what my bud’s insurance company told him. SOL

OK, but still not Nissan's fault or responsibility in any way.

I agree with Ovr on this as its not fair to blame them for road junk that bounces up. Maybe a skid plate cover under the tank may have helped but it still basically up to the driver to avoid these objects. I can understand why the owner had to pay on this one.  :)

Using plastic gas tanks on an SUV without skid plates is poor engineering on Nissan’s part. If consumers are experiencing punctures then this issue needs to be addressed. The fact that Nissan is not stepping up to resolve this does not speak well for them.

At first I was of a different point of view and inclined to go along with Ovr and Barrie, but Snowy does have a valid point. It's an SUV and yes some people must go off road in them. So a plastic tank, unprotected, would be a not so pretty sight when ruptured

Skid plate might not have worked, but I'm sure their engineering department could have come up with two options 1 - offroad, 2- highway. No forget that - some dumbo will still take it off road thinking he is superman and can defy the options. Still an enclosure for the tank of some kind would be worthwhile.

Bah, the Murano is a soft roader, and is Marketed as such.  You ever watch a Murano commercial?  They are urban mommy haulers, not rock crawlers.  Just because it is a two box design with awd doesn't mean Nissan is obligated to put skid plates on it.

The Murano is not a truck-based SUV, it is a car-based CUV. Skidplates would be used by maybe 2% of the Murano-driving population, and add cost and weight. Very few (likely zero) CUVs have or need skid plates. A 4Runner needs them, a Highlander does not. A Pathy needs them, a Murano does not.  ;D
