So now that this thread's been hijacked into a snow-tires suck flame war...

More questions...

How should I go about getting rid of my current snow tires and picking up ones that fit?

My ideal scenario would be me trading the ones I have, for similar ones that fit my car, but I'm not sure what mine are worth or where to look for used snows. I don't know enough about tires to buy them privately. I live in Hamilton and work in Waterloo, can anyone recommend a good used tire shop in that area?

Also what snow tires should I get?

I drive 70km's one way to work so I'll need a good snow tire that won't wear out too fast. I had no problems with the X-ice's on the Golf so something similar that won't wear out fast is my ideal tire.

Thanks again.

Jeremy

Offer the 14's for sale on a VW forum in the fall.  They'll be snapped up.  You get very little for used tires at a tire shop.

Bridgestone Blizzaks always get good press, especially the new REVO1, but treadwear on previous models has not been a strong point (maybe that has changed).  Nokians have a cult following and historically have good tread life.  I wouldn't hesitate to put some Hakka 2's on the P5.  There really are too many choices out there, but these would be my top two picks, based on reports, availability, and driving older Blizzaks and Nokians.

Morty will be able to comment directly on what he offers, and you should consider buying directly from him, as well.  In Hamilton, my dad likes TireCraft on Rymal Rd.  They carry Nokian, among many others.  I put budget snows on my EL, and I don't really miss the Nokians (which were on a Matrix) that much.  If the top brands are a little too expensive, there are alternatives.

^^ I agree ^^

Seeing that the P5 comes with V-Rated tires, I'd look for a set of H-Rated winters as they won't degrade the handling as much as a softer winter tire.

The Toyo Garrit HT's have received great reviews.

We did have some nice alloys this season that were well priced. Still most people went with the cheaper steelies. I guess it must be a Canadian thang.

Wether you go with a performance or H-rated winter tire vs. a Q-rated really depends on where you live and what kind of conditions you encounter.

I'm pretty sure 14's don't fit on a protege5.  My wife has one and we tried (for shits-n-giggles) to put steelies from her 99 Protege on there (14", OEM Mazda steelies), and they rubbed the caliper.

We went with some 15" Mazda steelies with brand new Nokian Hakkapellita 1's.  BEST snow and ice tires you can buy, period.

I've read of many people using 14's.  It probably depends on the rim you're using.

On my wifes Mazda Protege we have been using Blizzaks (4) for three years now (got them used) bought another set of rims they work great in snow and on Ice.
My Car a 92 Tercel has studded winter tires (4) they work even better, once the tires on the Protege wear out I will put studded tires on it too.

The benfit of living in Manitoba I can use studded tires (October to April). Too bad for those of you living in Ontario but I have heard that the Ont. goverment is think of changes the rules on stuuded tires.

Just make sure you get four winter tires not the usual two everyone likes to use when driving front wheel drive. That way you can start and stop

Are the T rated tires a happy medium?

Bought a set of Michelin X-Ice. Absolutely love them! Great in snow, ice, wet and dry. Definitely worth it and reconciled me with Michelin as I wasn't their biggest fan. Had good experience in the past with Blizzak but not durable enough for the driving conditions in Southwestern Ontario.
