static shocks when getting out of car
« on: February 23, 2006, 11:25:20 am »
When I get out of my car these day I get these really huge electric shocks when I close the door. I thought this was all worked out of cars by now. Do I need to buy a chain?

I want to know about that too. I get a lot of static when I touch the door to close it. Overall, I get a lot of static from doors, pretty much everything. I work with computers and I take extra precaution with them. Could it be because of the fabric you wear?

Use anti-static spray on your car seats. It helps a lot for some time.

Is the door handle plastic?  If so, only touch the handle when closing the door.  This works until you have to touch a metal entrance door.... :o

Or hold on to a metal part of the door while your foot touches the ground.  Static Guard works, though only for a short period of time.

The seat fabric used in my Focus has a tendency to generate static easily when exiting the vehicle.  It is the only vehicle I have ever owned where static can be a problem, even in the summer!

It's karma.

I guess  ;D

Passengers in my car don't get static shocks like I do. I get em everywhere.

What I do is I close my car door by stepping out carefully  and then pushing the door closed by pushing on the window. Then when I get to my house, and grab the door handle ...zZZaPp! I get the schock. I remember that cars use to have (and you could by this) a chain that you hang off of the back bumper and it lays on the ground as you drive. This is supposed to ground the car and eliminate the problem (which happens in winter Toronto).

I just touch the plastic places on the vehicle when getting in and out to prevent the static shocks. Fortunately the whole car is plastic like material so it has stopped all of this problem with this vehicle. Its a Saturn with the Polymer body panels. Don't rust either. When I reach the house I always stop for a sec to let any hydro disapate from me before i touch the Doorhandle as well. I have a very good Humidifier on my Furnace as well which really helps with this problem in the house as well.  :)

Grab metal of car before exiting.  Then exit the car while holding metal no more shocks.

We discussed this before.
