You need the height that's your only real limitation.

You need a minimum 10 feet with no restrictions like a garage door opener, track and lights.  12 feet is really what you want.  18 by x 20 is too thin if you still want 2 cars in it.  In addition, you gotta have a good 6 inch reinforced floor and a subdivision house definitely doesn't have that although I don't know your situation.

You're most likely correct.  I assumed it would have been too costly or I wouldn't have enough space or some such thing.

Oh well...  Back to the 'death trap' I guess...    :)

I'm still thinking about digging a service hole in my garage. Although it needs permits and probably some reinforcement alterations since there's a room above the garage...
I miss my garage back in my native country. Located underground and being two levels high. The car sits in the upper level with a concrete floor and there's the second level below it for storage and service. Full-length hole in the middle of the floor, and the wide concrete table in the second level to stand on. The hole is covered by thick wood. Very safe and convenient. It also was 4mx7m…
