When did SUV Become CUV
« on: February 02, 2006, 10:40:26 am »
I have noticed in many of the recent press releases around new SUV models (e.g. Ford Edge) that manufacturers are moving to a new naming practice. They seem to be steering clear of using the term SUV and now using CUV instead.

Is there really a difference? I don't think so. Then why the new naming convention - nobody wants to buy something that has SUV as part of it identifier because of the perception of poor gas mileage?

Thoughts??

The "CUV" is generally a car / unit-body platform rather than a truck platform.  I think they are trying to keep them seperate.

I do think "CUV" appeals to those who have joined the backlash against big SUVs, but secretly still want an SUV ;)

CUV = Closeted Utility Vehicle?   ;D

Just what we need, something else that needs to come out of a closet.

Seriously, the Crossover Utility Vehicle (as opposed to the Cute Utility Vehicle) is an attempt, I think, to better market those vehicles which tend to have options such as:
--AWD
--higher ground clearance than a regular car
--cargo areas
--look like true off road vehicles

but have:
--car type construction (uni-body,...)
--car like rides

and are aimed at a more urban clientele.  That they also tend to enjoy better gas mileage than a "real" SUV is also a telling point.  It really is an evolution of the AWD people/cargo hauler.

Random's post  :iagree:

That is exactly what has happened and that is the difference between SUV and CUV. My Highlander is a CUV, the 4Runner is a SUV for example.
2011 BMW X3 35i Vermillion Red, MSport
and
2012 Toyota Camry SE V6 in Alpine White

Acura reps at the Detroit show were adamant about saying the new RDX was a CUV and NOT an SUV.

They're going to call it whatever the in thing at the time is to call it.  SUV, CUV, SAV, POS, BS....whatever.

True, and with rising gas prices, SUV will connote high gas bills and be out of favor; while the CUV will be interpreted to mean less gas expense and be the "in" thing. Marketing, bah... ::) Sorry, Jeff.  ;)
