I'm thinking about driving up a nice old Alfa Spider from California. It isn't legal here (in Cali) since the injection has been removed and carbs installed.  It will be going to Alberta, where I understand there are no smog checks/AirCare checks.  Is this correct?  Are there other provinces that don't require an exhaust check yearly or bi-yearly?

Also, I may bring my daily driver up to Canada as well.  Even though I personally don't care for tinted windows, my side windows have whats called a light tint (tho looks a little on the dark side to me) while my rear window has a limo tint (very dark).  I think I remember seeing a car in Alberta with tinted windows all around.  Is this legal?  Are tinted windows legal in other provinces?

Thanks for your help!

In Alberta, no amount of tint is legal on the windows beside and in front of the driver. The windows behind the driver can be as dark as you like. Plenty of cars in Alberta have illegal tinting. And every one takes the risk that a cop will ticket them (or make them remove it).

There is no smog testing in Alberta.

no smog test in Alberta. You'll no out of province safetly inspection though - its reasonably strict. Tinting on front and front side windows is a no go. The rear side and rear are ok to tint but not sure how much.

what about here in Vancouver, is there any restrictions on how dark the tint on the
driver should be?

For window tint regulations (or lack thereof) by province try searching the particular province's Ministry of Transportation website. There should be a search button on each site which would make finding the info quick and easy. Plus you'd be getting the info from the official source. As Barrie might say let your fingers do the walking. :)

As for emissions testing Ontario has a testing program, called Driveclean. If I remember correctly it does not cover the whole province, northern Ontario is exempt. Quebec I have no idea about. Again try their MoT website.

Good discussion here about window tinting (and BC), will need to go through the pages.  http://www.cartalkcanada.com/forum/index.php/topic,46311.0.html

If the car is over 15 years old it does not have to comply with a number of Transport Canada standards.  If it's over 20(?) years old I don't think it needs to have emissions tests.  At least I think that's the rule in Ontario...
