$4K to $7K Used Car
« on: January 08, 2006, 08:51:50 pm »
My girlfriend has recently expressed interest in getting her own car. It would be her first car and it would be used occasionally to get from point A to point B only. Mostly crossing the bridge from Dartmouth to Halifax each day and back. In the summer we might use it to go up to the cottage, but other than that, that would be all the driving that the car would be doing.

Her dad is going to help her out with buying it, so therefore he has some say in what kind she gets. He is pro GM, along anything Japanese or European (except VW). Anything else wouldn't really be considered. Her price range is about $4K-$7K right now. Her dad has hinted that he might be able to raise that price range a grand or two if need be. That is, he wouldn't mind paying extra for an obviously better car or if there was some spectcular deal.

She wouldn't be actually getting it until the late summer, but of course being a car guy, I got excited and started searching already. I figured an Accord EXR would suit her well. The usual suspects are also on the list such as civic, corolla, camry, protoge etc, however the Impala, Century and Lumina have been tossed into the mix by her dad as well. I like the Impala a lot, and the Century is nice but I'm not too sure on the Lumina. Maybe just because I haven't hear a whole lot about them.

Any info that someone can give on any of these vehicles would be appreciated, but especially on the Accord 4 or 6 cylinder engines as I am leaning towards an Accord for her.

Are maintenance costs going to be an issue?  Is it a basic transportation device?  Nothing more, nothing less?  Need AC?  I'd go with a newer Civic if it is an appliance but if you want some fun and can handle some maintenance....an older Miata, a 240SX, an e30 BMW, 300ZX, RX7, Supra.....this reminds me of when I was looking.  A neighbour actually had a 94 EXR coupe (green in colour) for sale.....I drove by it daily, was too busy to stop in...and poof...sold.

Obviously she would want something that is easy on maintenance, but she's not going to be doing any hardcore driving. It will be a basic transportation device. The older sports cars are a lot harder to find here in NS, and if you do find one, they are usually grossly overpriced. We haven't ruled out civic, but she would  prefer something mid sixed. Which is why I thought of the Accord EXR.

...It will be a basic transportation device...

Yeah, an older Accord or Camry will do nicely, but they're a bit pricey thanks to the name.  The Maxima is as well made and less expensive to buy, but no cheaper to operate.  A super-cheap alternative is a Protege, but they're quite a bit smaller.  Great value, though.

Mid 90's Subaru Legacy's are cheap, reliable, and have AWD.  The wagons are roomy and practical.  I've seen 2000MY Legacy wagons for $8K now...

DO NOT consider the 1993- Mazda 626.  Forderized and junk.  Stay away from them.

All I can think of right now...
No place I'd rather be...

Thanks for the advice John. She was looking at 626's. I will warn her to steer clear (excuse the pun).

As for the Volvos, most of the ones I've found have been way too high in kms or out of her price range.

Volvo for life!   ;D

BB, can your GF drive a stick? BB, can your GF drive a stick?  I always liked the looks of the Mx-6 Mystere. ABS,  leather sport seats,  V6  power,  etc,  would sound  very nice. The Pontiac Grand Prix isn't too terribly bad.  :)

A buddy of mine just bought a Bonneville for his first car.  Aside from high gas consumption and large size, it seems to be a decent enough vehicle.  Don't know much about them, though.
