03 tiburon a good buy?
« on: January 08, 2006, 12:59:06 am »
hi everyone. My 94 integra is gettin tired and needs a replacement soon
I tested a 03 tiburon v6 5 speed today, it has 31k and dealer asking $19,900 for it. I love the looks of these cars, I went for a 10 minutes drive and the airbag light came on twice. But the car drivers very nice.

I have a few concerns.

1. it has 4 new tires. what happen to the OEMs? don't they last more then 30k? maybe previous owner abuse the car? or dealer replace them to make the car more appealing?

2. I looked under the hood, it looked too new to be a used car. the bolts and plastic clips look brand new. I try very hard washing my tucson, but can't get engine bay to look like new.

3. the car is from an out of province, so I can't go to the hyundai dealer or insurance company for info. The saleman called hyundai dealer and asked about factory warranty and it still exist. The car was sold in aug/03 in winnipeg and it was a lease return. who leased a car for two years?

4. the original MSRP is $26000. and I have seen private sales of v6 for $14500 lately with 60k. ( very difficult to find what I like in my area because of small used car market, therefore most newer used cars are from out of province) so if I offer $15,000 they still make money? (they are allow to make a profit, ;) and I don't want to make a low offer to offend them)

My other option is to buy a 06 civic because I drive a lot in the city and I can save a lot of mony on fuel.

any comments a welcome and thanks in advance.

Most dealers will shampoo the engine compartment so it looks brand spanking new.  The new tires seem odd.  Especially with only 19K on it.  Do a full search on it by getting the VIN and going over to www.carproof.com or something similar to get the full history of the vehicle.  Does the dealer have full maintenance records?

It has 31K on it.

A reputable dealer will replace tires once they reach 50% wear. Doesn't seem too unusual that a car with 31k could've been half way through the oem tires. Of course they do it to make the car more appealing. Most people find new tires more appealing than worn ones.

It sounds like they have a good detail department that knows how to clean an engine.

thanks for the replies.
The car is in a ford dealership, and I think it has been in an accident because of new bolts and clastic clips under the hood, and I hate buying a used car from out of province. The only auto insurance available to us is own by provincial government, and for $25 they will provide claim records.

Insurance is cheap. they range from $1000 to $1500 for all new cars regardless of age and driving histry. A 17 year old can insure an s2000 for $1500 per year comprehansive with $700 deductible. this tiburon will cost me $1300 a year

For that much money I rather buy the new civic, But they just went up in price.

Ouch someone trading in a Tiburon at a Ford dealership? I wonder which Ford vehicle would be considered an upgrade from the Tiburon? Maybe the Tiburon has problems? Why else would anyone trade a Tiburon for a Ford, any Ford?  :-\

It was most likely bought at an auction. The suzuki dealer by my place always has acuras and M-B for sale. Cannot see these being traded in on a suzuki.
Enjoying the Alberta advantage

I just told the saleman i am no longer interested in the tiburon.

I am from saskatoon, the tiburon was purchased from an aution in winnipeg. people tend to keep cars longer in saskatoon, so it is very hard to find a good 2-3 year old used car. I was looking for a used suv last year but bought a new tucson instead. we have look at several used suv's at dealers and private sales(mostly curbsiders) and none of them seem like good buys.

buying a used car will save me a few bucks but with alot of running around.

My teg's got some tranny issues. it's got 270k. I thought it only needs a throwout bearing but the mech told me it is the input shaft making noise.
so I am looking at a used tranny or another car.

My teg will still last another 10k or so, so the search continues...

There is a Forum Member  by the name  of Neal, he is a Finance Manager of the Hyundai dealership  in 'Toon Town. e-mail him and he will be  able  to find a good car and a good  price for you. Neal also had a Teg,  might  still have it. He is probably one of the most honest and upfront in car sales.

Contact this guy...

Thanks for the reference guys.
As you know, I don't post here to promote myself or my dealership.  If the poster wants to PM me I'll help as much as I can, and as I have told others who do so I will help them whether they buy from me or Timbucktoo.

I'll just comment on the tires right now.  The '03 V6 Tibs came with Summer only Michelin Pilots.  They were one hell of a tire, but real soft, and real useless for winter.  Our used car manager leased one, with an auto for his GF, and the tires were pretty much shot with 25k.  2004 and newer Tibs use a less agressive but longer wearing all season michelin pilot.
