Motomaster G-05
« on: January 04, 2006, 12:02:49 am »
Anyone use this? I bought this last year thinking it is the equivalent of Zerex G-05. It is a clear-coloured coolant in a gold jug.

Anyway, after almost a year on this coolant I noticed that dried crusty white residue is forming on the lip of the rubber hose where it is attached to the thermostat housing. Is this cause for alarm or is this normal? There doesn't seem to be any coolant leaks - just the reservoir tank needing occasional top-ups. I used 50/50 mix with distilled water.

BTW, I flush the coolant every 2-3 years and the hoses have been cleaned at each flush that's why I'm midly surprised to see the residue at the hose lip.

Thanks!

Keep an eye on it and make sure the hose clamp is tight as a small amount of seepage will do that. If this a factory style clamp then possibly a aftermarket rachet type might be better. These are quite cheap to buy and tighten much tighter in my mind.  :)

Thanks Barrie, I will recheck the factory worm-gear clamps for tightness. I'm more concerned if there are any crusty residues building up inside the system like inside the water pump.

Formula 1, Motomaster to be specific?  Ya I use it in Bimmer and Porsche.  Rather hoping it was going to be blue in colour.

I don't know the deal on your white stuff.  I'd say Barrie is right about the clamps not been 100% tight but after time they kinda weld themselves on so they might be OK now.

What brand/kind of coolant was in your system prior to using this Formula 1 Motomaster?  I had a bit of time to kill so I flushed both cars twice while running straight water in between for a few hours (to clean out heater core) which included pulling the drain plug on the block which is a real PIA in an effort not to mix this new coolant with any older stuff which was pink in Bimmer and green in Porsche.

This type of problem is why I like to use the Baking Soda cleaning in the rad system as it gets everything out extremely well. The insides are completley sterile when you are done with flushing after.  :)

Thanks all. The previous coolants have always been OEM Volvo coolant which I believe is G-48. I wanted to try the G-05 after reading so many good things about it. Yes, I got the $15.99 MotoMaster Formula 1 "G-05 compatible" in the gold jug. Prior to refilling with G-05 I did a white vinegar flush (70% water/30% white vinegar). I don't know if it made a difference as the old coolant looked pretty clean (i.e. no flakes, sludge, etc.)

I was not concerned about debris when I flushed.  I was only not wanting to mix different coolant types together.

The only negative experience I have had mixing coolants is when I topped up the regular green Prestone with the fancy schmancy VW G-12. This created some ugly looking gel after being run. :o
