Do winter tires lose air faster than all seasons? I pumped the air 1week ago when I measure it again; it lose 5psi per tire. Is this common issue in the winter?

Either your reading your gauge wrong, your gauge stinks or your taking readings under different conditions.

If you have had a drop in air temp in the last week , that would account for the drop in air pressure in you tires.  I forget what the ratio is, something like 1 psi per 5 degrees temp change?  (Morty, help me here please  )

I have been having a lot of problems keeping air in my Hankooks this winter, with variable tire pressures occurring.  Checked them yesterday (should all be at 45 psi) range was 1 at 45, 1 at 35 the other two in between.  The high and low were both on the same axle too

How long has these tires been mounted on these rims as rust can grow on the steel rims and cause leaks. A very common occurence at this time of year. The cold temperatures at night will also deflate tires to a certain degree.

In my case, they have been on for about a year, on the factory alloys.  Quite frankly, I am not very happy with the tires (two flats, one requiring a tire replacement; plus some weird and sudden vehicle shifting left/right).  Will not be getting these again.  Morty is close by, will talk to him about suitable tires in the fall.

My tires were installed during mid november. I keep pumping up air then it loses air in cold weather again. I read the air gauge correctly.

Trainman yours sound like bad sidewalls with the belts starting to seperate. Picard yours sounds like a leaking rim type of problem. Either that or bad valve stems.

Thanks Barrie1, the tire shop says nothing wrong, just that they are a "traction" type tire and these tend to "wander" a bit more than regular tires.  Never had this problem with other "traction" type tires though.

I don't know if it's been mentioned but Nitrogen is not affected as much by lower temps, compared to air.

"Air" is 78+% nitrogen.

Trainman I can understand the wandering for that reason as some tires are made with different types of materials in the belts. Not all are made of steel. Some are much more flexible then others.

But to jump a whole lane with no warning? (On Highway 1 in the Fraser Valley, east of Vancouver is only one example)  Luckily no one was in the other lane.  And as the tires wear, they are getting worse.  Metal grid bridge decks are totally scary with these tires.  New ones needed for sure 


  Anyway, enough from me, did not mean to hijack picard's thread, sorry.

Sorry Trainman I didn't realize how bad those tires are actually. Yes a new set is definitely in order. I would deal them ASAP as there still is some thread on them and trade-in value.
