Remember when Tom Cruise put one of these in the drink in Risky Business? An interesting car that was ahead of its time (in my opinion). Where a lot of cars from the '80s look dated to me the 928 is still pretty cool.

Oooooo!  Ahhhh!  Very nice (not sure how I missed this thread before).  I'd love it if Porsche called it a 928 again too.  (doubtful, but it'd be nice for those of us who are fans of the origina!).

IIRC, the Panamera was supposed to be the "928-replacement".

Porsche better be prepared for the same kind of fan backlash that met the Charger if they market it as such...

...which I guess is why Porsche "released" these 2-door "928-successor"... :)

I don't think the 928 has an iconic name that would cause too many people to get up in arms over a sedan. Now if the 911 got turned into a sedan that would be another matter. Look at Lotus they took the Europa name and stuck it on a touring GT car instead of a bares bones, no comprimise sports car - no one raised a fuss.

I was told that the price of rebuilding that rear mounted (manual) transmission on a 928 makes an engine rebuild lokk cheap by comparison

By the time you're rebuilding the trans, you've spent all your money on clutches and water pumps, so you just walk away anyway!

It's the ONLY Porsche in history where buying an AT version is the best idea.  The MB-made four speed box is the most reliable and inexpensive part on the whole car and is tuned to really exploit the V-8.

I wouldn't doubt if this new "928" is called the "Jambalaya"
No place I'd rather be...

Finally, a good looking Porsche!

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/244090/reborn_porsche_928_is_fronting_up.html

Although IMHO they have just melded together the front of a Pants-o-rama and the rear of a DB9.  Looks good though!

I'm so thankful it doesn't have that forced-onto-everything 911 headlight/front end treatment.  I'm soooo tired of it.

Back in the day...the only car that looked like a 911...was a 911.  Yet you still knew the other Porsche were indeed Porsches...

I agree on trying to force the 911 look on everything, ridiculous. But what a great looking car the 928 is, imagine what they could do if they really went to town on the 911..

I don't hate the 911...I suppose they could sharpen it up some.  But to many that would be blasphemy.  But not everything in their line up has to look like a 911.

Imagine if every vehicle in GMs line-up had the snout of a Vette?  Or all Fords looked like Mustangs?  People would ridicule them to no end.

I can at least tolerate a grille I suppose....I mean, BMW has used the same style on most of their cars.  But Porsche uses the front shape, headlights, hoodlines, etc...A bit too much IMO..

This thread is a blast from the past...  :o

Still, four years later and nothing's changed: new 928 =

A Porsche GT car has been a long time coming, so this gets a big .

I actually uttered "Oh god" when I saw the rear 3/4 photo.

SUCH a beautiful car.
