2006 Honda Civic bargaining
« on: December 12, 2005, 10:01:25 pm »
Hi.  I am a first time car buyer.  I test drove the 2006 honda civic DX-G sedan and really like the car.  I was wondering if it is worth it to pay for the Dealer invoice price like on car cost canada, in order to help negotiate the price.  I guess my question is what is the best way to knock some cash off the price tag?

cheers

Welcome to the forum.  If you want to knock some dollars off, I suggest you wait until the sales of these things taper off.  If they go like hotcakes like they are now....there's very little reason to give a customer a deal.  You might be able to pay MSRP but negotiate some accessories for free...

I think it worth the money to get carcost invoice price. Always get fully prepared before you enter the dealership.

my sis she's got a 2006 black dx-g (or is it dg-x?, i dunno), 4-door, auto, no other frills, i guess.  she said she was able to bargain good but got no freebies.  ask her at hotchiliballz@yahoo.ca... and hope she doesn't take your email as spam and delete it.  :-)  good luck.

Normally I'd say have the invoice price and for the $20 or whatever it can't hurt but in the case of Civics right now I wouldn't expect any kind of discount.

Why would they discount all indications are they can sell everything they have at MSRP. I doubt that dealer a will give you a discount to keep you from going to dealer B who also will sell you at MSRP.

Maybe some accessories to keep you in the dealer would happen.

I'm usually the first one to talk about buying at a fair proice but in this case MSRP is the market price. Now it doesn't mean you should roll over. As a first time buyer if you decide you can aford the market price of MSRP you should pay MSRP Freight and tax. No document fees, advertising fees or anything else. It should be an easy clean experience for both you and the dealer. No charges for etching balha blah blah.

If you don't ask for free florr mats or oil changes or whetever you won't get it but other than that you are gonna have to wait a while before you are going to start negotiatikng up from invcoice on such a hot seller.

I have a friend of mine who went with the car cost canada invoice and got himself a Civic EX for 800$ off MSRP... I don't know if he managed to get that b/c he went on the last day of the month or b/c that specific dealership was having an off-month but I told him he did really well considering it is such a new car. Idon't say you'll be able to get the same deal but wait till after XMas and you might get some money off  ;D

Depends on when you want to get your car.
Go get the invoice price. Then add invoice freight and go there at the end of December, after Christmas with this offer. If they laugh at you, just say you'll be back in a month. If they still offer you nothing else, come at the end of January and try again. You should get a break.
Try that at two-three dealerships if you can. You have nothing to lose, and don't feel embarrassed. There are many circumstances that affect manager’s decision.

thanks for all the advice.  the only problem is that i am in saskatoon and only has one dealer (going to regina is out of the question).  So it is limiting that it is a kone horse town and i can't play hardball and tell him i will go to another dealer (he knows i aint goin nowhere!)

Well, the month end suggestion still applies.  Whether a large market or small, they still want to boost their sales volumes.  I wouldn't bother with CCC or APA in your situation.

If you only have 1 local dealer, I'd be looking for a FAIR deal, seeing as you'll have to have it serviced there.

'06 Civic DX-G manual:
INV $17,019, MSRP $18,300.

I'd venture to say you should be satisfied with a superb deal between $600-1,000 off.

SirAqua I'd ventre to say you are on crack if you think a SASKATCHEWAN dealer is going to give him anything close to $1K off... if the snakes here in Southern Ontario are unwillig to even go to $500 off how in the name of Soichiro Honda is he going to get double that amount in a captive market with a high demand car? You may not be in love with Hondas but don't be giving this guy such bad advice..

yeah, seeing as i will get 500$ rebate for being a recent uni grad, the dealer may be unwilling to bargain.  However even 300$ on top of the 500$ would be great.

the $500 comes from Honda Canada and does not affect the dealer's profit. However there has been talk of Honda dioscontinuing the Grad rebate on Civics due to high demand. Check before you assume the rebate will apply.

You missed the part about $1116 for automatic.

Nono, just the way it was worded:

Quote
2006 Civic DXG Auto 4 Door - Dealer Invoice Price: Base $ 17, 019; AT: $1, 116

Implies that the AT version is $17 019.  Whereas that seems to be the price for the MT, and the AT is +$1116.

:D
