Hey Arcrtic steve! You say to leave them with 40psi. Isn't that interesting. I read somewhere in this forum last year that you're supposed let most of the air out. Of course I did that and in addition I left them out in the garage all summer and now i've had to had three of them resealed and grinded down. So anyone who wants to learn from my experience, here's what I've learned:

1) store tires ideally inside where the temperature stays relatively stable;

2) don't buy used rusty rims;

3) don't deflate them and I guess maybe listen to Arctic here and fill them up with air nice and hard!

I probably had too much time on my hand.   This is what I did to store my summer wheels/tires:
1.  Wash and wax, then double-bagged
2.  Store in basement, stack them flat, one on top on another.
3.  After 1-2 months, reverse the wheels so that the top one will go to the bottom.

You see, I bought some new AMG wheels last summer and I am doing my best to keep them in top shape.

Tire stores store them on racks so that if the tire the customer needs is on the BOTTOM of the stack they don't have to move a dozen tires...  :P

If you have the room Crappy Tire has a nifty little storage tree ($24.99) that keeps the tires off the floor and out of the way. The sites I've looked at said to keep some air in the tires(about 20 psi). It works for me.
