Storing tires - standing up or lay flat?
« on: December 11, 2005, 04:33:27 pm »
Took off my all season radials and put on some winter tires. How should I store my ASRs, standing up or lay them flat on top of each other? I've seen conflicting advice on this on various google searches.

I currently have them stored standing up beside each other.

I store my ties stacked up on their side with a cardboard divider between them.

It's not only virgin air, it's that virgin tires can stand up, but once used, they should be laid down..... ;D ;D ::)

my friend told me once that he left them standing and this created a flat spot on the tire.

Bah, that's funny, unless they were bias-ply tires.  I left my tires all winter on the car last year and they were fine.

So one flat on side, one standing, one no difference...seems there's no consensus on this here either. Tire sites also give conflicting advice on this.

I have them stored standing up beside each other, as I have a storage locker (condo), so can't lay them flat.

If you don't have space to lay them flat...then you store them upright.  I personally don't see any difference....just personal preference.

Yes, the garages store them upright.  However, I've always stored my tires flat, mounted on rims, outer rim side up.  Each is in its own plastic bag.

I use 4x4 planks to keep them off the ground in my garage and any related moisture issues.  My garage is unheated.

After 5 years of swapping out winters or all seasons on two different vehicles, I have noticed no problems.

I couldn't decide between flat or vertical, so I leaned mine against a wall on a 45 degree angle.

It really doesn't matter.  Put 40 psi in them for storage.

Ideally you want to stack them one on top of the other. However, if you dont have the room then you make do with what you have got. Not the end of the world. I am curious...if you have room to stand them up, dont you have room to stack them? A stack usually takes up less room....

It's a VERY narrow locker, just wide enough to fit two tires standing up side by side. Too narrow to lay the tire flat.

Cheap builder. They call it a "bicycle locker", which is a euphemism for "we're cheapin' you out, by giving you a half size locker". You can't even fit a bicycle in there without one of the tires being suspended off the ground. Anyway, I digress...
