'04 Elantra GL Snow Tire & Store Recommendations
« on: December 09, 2005, 11:41:42 am »
Hey all.

My parentals are stuck trying to figure out what to buy and where to buy snows on their '04 Hyundai Elantra GL. The tires currently are 195/60R 15's.

I recommended the Michelin X-Ice and also from looking on here the Kumho KW19 as a lower cost alternative.

The lowest price they've found is about $135/tire for the Michelins. Plus rims. That's more than $800 bucks - more than anticipated.

Tried to call Steelcase in Markham but was on hold for over 15 mins on two occassions, over two days.

Any recommendations on tires, lower prices, or where to get 'em?

With thanks...
Me  :D

How about TT's?  But I'm thinking you want them this weekend?

Can you put 14's on that car?  That would help save a little bit of money.

Can't believe that Steelcase is still that busy, wow. I'm sure todays snow will not help.

I think now you might be held captive to stock as I've heard that places are getting low on everything.

Maybe try Costco and Sam's club.  I believe the both sell X-Ice.

Surely there must be reputable tire shops in your area other than Steelcase?  And there's alwasy TT as quad mentioned.

The X-Ice price was from Price Costco. But they are charging more for the wheel.

I hadn't looked into TT's to be honest.

Hmmmm...

EDIT: First time I've been on TT's site. Lower prices, but then you have freight and mounting. Is it ONLY $11.50 in freight per tire? That seems ridiculously low.

  TireTrends is my first stop for tires, I have yet to purchase new tires though, but when I do they will be getting my business (except on R's because I don't think they are that big on them).

Once mounted, they'd be no less expensive tho, would they?

Yes they are still A LOT lower.

Generally the tires are cheaper, the rims are the same (for steelies)  Mounting is the same or a tad lower, you have to pay mounting if you get it done locally as well.

But you save the PST, that's 8% right there.  Shipping is LESS than the 8% tax most of the time. :)

So a full tire arrives at your doorstep WITH the steelies at under $20 delivery charge???!

Might not be a bad idea.

On tire and wheel packages we mount and Road Force balance for no charge. On just tires we are only able to offer installation for those customers in and around the Vancouver area and that is an additional charge.

Wound up getting Conti Viking SnowTech's (mentioned in the thread you linked CdnExpress) in Etob/Mississauga for a good price. Was their last set.

Also, they were offering X-Ices for a decent price it seemed too, although they said they had to call to another place to check inventories and secure a set before making the deal.

Thanks to all, and especially Mort at TireTrends  for taking the time to explain the tires, wheels, proper mounting, shipping, and making recommendations. If I needed tires myself I'd be calling you first... along with purchasing! But the snow storm in TO meant my parents wanted them ASAP.

So far, they're happy with the SnowTech's.   :D
