« on: December 07, 2005, 01:13:51 pm »
If you had a budget of $35,000-$40,000 which of these SUVs would you think about buying....

1. 2006 Nissan Xterra
2. 2006 Toyota 4Runner V6
3. 2006 Grand Vitara
4. 2006 Forester
5. 2006 CRV
6. 2006 X-Trail

tell me what you think...

It's a mixed bag, there are real SUVs (XTerra, 4Runner) mixed in with softer crossovers (Forester, CRV). For real off-road either of the XTerra or 4Runner is fine but XTerra likely cheaper. For crossover, I would take Forester or XTrail.  ;)

If someone offered me anyone of these, I think I would take the Forester XT (or whatever the trim level of the one with the turbo).

If it is my money, I think the CR-V because it is cheaper, and will keep its value better.

If you ask me ANY SUV between 35-40, I think I would go with the 2006 Pilot. I like its refreshed look a lot.

out of those the most appealing to me would the Forester since its most car like. The only one I've really had a chance to sample is the X-Trail and I thought it was pretty craptactular.

The XT is a scream. First gear in the MT is nuts and not for the faint of hart. What a package; awd safety, wagon practicality, Subaru quality, Subaru Reliability, and kick a 350Z in the a$$ acceleration. The rear seating is tight but manageable for children. Booster seats are a challenge as the front seats have to move up quite a bit when behind the passenger.

For me, in what I need from an SUV, the 4Runner or Xterra only.

Xterra does not have an AWD mode on the transfer case, only 2wd or 4wd (h and l).  Not sure if the 4Runner has AWD in addition to the 2wd and 4wd modes.  My Pathy as 4 modes (2wd, AWD 4wd high and 4wd low) and the AWD is a god send this time of year.

Have been very happy with my Pathfinder and it will be difficult to replace when the time comes as most "SUV"s are not very bush capable and for my work I need a good one in the bush.

You should decide what off-road capabilities you need as that will help narrow the list.  If you need a true off-road vehicle, the list will be quite short.

I have been more than impressed with the 4Runner V6 my dad bought this past summer.  Brisk acceleration, very good fuel economy for the segment (11.6L/100km at last count) and very well laid out.  Theirs is the limited, which takes the price over $50K.  The real value is in the Sport model with cloth seats.  The folks "had" to have leather, but the regular 4Runner, with the same powertrain, would be hard to pass up from that list.

Overall, I really like the list.  The only initial "surprise" choice is the Suzuki, but I understand the new Grand Vitara is a massive step forward for them.

For body-on-frame, I'd take the 4Runner.  For unibody, the new Forester XT would be lovely, thanks.

No brainer, the Forester XT! (we almost went for 1 rather than the RAV4, but the price difference and gas mileage made us go for the more "reasonable" solution... too bad!  :'()
What bout the '06 Rav4 with the V6  ???

So if I had $40,000 to spend, and given those choices, would I be allowed to get an '06 Grand Vitara JLX - L, and spend the remaining cash on a suspension lift, proper skidplates, and (maybe) swapping the automatic for a 5-spd?  That way you get something as capable in the rough as the Xterra and 4Runner, with much better mileage and styling that doesn't look like some sort of steroid-laced urban assault vehicle.  Less cargo room, but you could include a roof box in the $40,000.

I thought the new Grand Vitara was a capable off-roader?  No need to do a whole bunch of stuff to it to bring it in line with the Xterra/4Runner?  Not sure, have not looked at it yet.  No need, the Pathy is running fine and should until 250,000 km (only at 87,000 km now, just broke in  8))

Now that I rethink about it, if someone gives me the choice of a free SUV around the $40K mark, I think I'd go with the new Pathfinder. Lots of space, powerful and should be reliable. But I wouldn't buy it myself, I'd go with a Highlander or Pilot before the Pathfinder.

The Xterra tops my list of any econo-mid SUV.  It's got the looks, the power, the capabilities, and the Nissan backing.  I really like it's orange colour too.
