A Stop Sign Hit My Wife!
« on: December 07, 2005, 11:19:59 am »
:o No, I am not joking. She was driving on the highway this morning and had the misfortune to be behind a dump truck. Next thing she knows there is a stop sign flying up from the roadway. Luckily, it missed the headlight assembly as that would cost a lot of $$$$ to fix. Also, I figure that we were actually lucky that the sign wasn't flying towards the windshield with the flat side as that could have been really dangerous. As it was the sign literally flew towards the car with the STOP lettering coming at her :D. Oh well, off to the body shops for some estimates, :'(

Woo...that's rather fortunate that nothing came close to the passenger compartment.  So it didn't fall off the truck she was following...the truck just sucked it up into the air?

I think it might have been on the highway already and the truck drove over it and then the sign came up from the rear wheels.

Glad to heard your wife is OK. Thems are the breaks sometimes. Doesn't look that bad from the pic, $300 should do the trick.

Ouch!

Glad to hear nobody got hurt.  As you note, had it flown upwards to the windshield, it would have been worse.

Pity she didn't take the dump trucks plate # and follow it up with them........maybe the offending sign was in the trucks load......otherwise why would a STOP sign be on the Hi-Way?...better yet kept the sign...maybe it has a serial # that can be traced...............LOTS OF IF's I KNOW..."IF" $100 or so will fix it..why bother..STOP IN THE NAME OF LOVE and take her out fer a nice dinner...................... :'(

Yeah I was thinking the same thing saffy.

But the main thing is that she was okay and that it wasn't serious. Hopefully the repairs won't cost too much.

Thanks for all the kind words gang. I'm not the least bit upset about this at all. Things like this happen all the time and as I wrote earlier it could have been a lot worse. I told my wife to put it out of her head and that I would look after it. If anything I feel that she was lucky and that she should buy a lottery ticket today! Boy, its a good thing we just paid the Civic off. First, a very expensive preventative maintenance and now some body work for the car.

Reminds me of one time I was driving down the highway, and a stick of pulp wood, maybe 4" dia x 4 ft long, fell off the truck in front of me.  I didn't have time to avoid it, so I ran over it...helluva sound as I ran over it (company car, no damage to the suspension)...when I looked in the mirror, it was bouncing end over end....wouldn't that do some damage if you nailed it at 100 km/h....

Thank goodness she wasn't hurt.  The damage is unfortunate; however, I would feel exactly like you with a wipe of the brow and a, "That'll LITERALLY buff right out." ...well, with a bit of sanding and painting first.

Don't ask me questions.  I don't have all the answers to stupid queries.

Glad to hear that your wife was not injured, and that the damage was cosmetic vs disabling your car.

I do love the irony that it was a stop sign moving toward her.

Hey Safristi,

That's too high class for me! ;) There is a great restaurtant here in Guelph called Romeros. It is a small Mom and Pop type Italian place that we both love. I think I will take her later this week as a surprise. She has been stressed out lately with an upcoming exam and this all should just STOP  ;D. Seriously though, dinner out is a great idea.

Well,

It looks like $375 to fix the hood and some small scratches in the right rear quarter (don't ask me where those came from). Interestingly though my body guy recommended waiting until spring. The sign didn't actually take all the paint off and after some buffing we are okay for now. I will talk it over with my wife. We had budgeted about $500 for winter tires, this is something we hadn't counted on happening.

Many years ago a good friend of mine was hit by a traffic signal as he was walking on a sidewalk downtown on a very windy day.  It hit him on the shoulder and partially dislocated it.  He still says it feels different than his other shoulder when it gets cold and damp.

Even now I remember this when I walk downtown on windy days.

Sorry to hear about your friend 99 Silver. I suffered a subluxation of my left shoulder in a hockey game (partial dislocation) and it has never been the same since. This was as a teenager to boot. Got to be careful with shoulders...
