Winter tires for '93 Accord
« on: November 29, 2005, 05:39:44 pm »
I need winter tires for my '93 Honda Accord LX (185/70-14).  I live in the Ottawa area, and although most of my winter driving should be urban, there is the possibility that I may have to do some highway driving as well.  I would like a tire that has excellent snow and ice traction, and acceptable dry and wet handling.  The ability to last at least three winters would be nice too (I estimate that I will do about 5000km at the most this winter).

I did some research and have added these tires to my list of choices:

Kumho KW-11
Michelin X-Ice
Pirelli Winter Carving
Toyo Observe GO-2 Plus

Notwithstanding the fact that the Kumho's cost considerably less than the others, which of these would be best for my needs?  Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I think the KW11 has been replaced by the KW19.  That aside, all of them are good choices.  Pirelli and Toyo might have the edge in deeper snow which would be useful in Ottawa and my personal pick would be the Toyos but you really won't go wrong with any of them.  Your choice at this point might be dictated by availability and price.

I have X-ice on my accord 93 EXR. I got the shop to install 195/60R15. X-ice is actually quiet on the road.  :o It feels weird to drive with snow tires because those rubber treads act like miniture air bubbles. I learn to brake the car slowly because this tire is squirly in emergecy stop  on dry pavement. The tire bites through slush snow, rain easily.

Some sizes in the KW11 have been phazed out, but still some sizes only available in that model. The replacement is the KW19, which is more aggressive and better in deep snow. The Prielli Winter Carving is great in deep snow and ice, but quite soft. Might do close to your requirement, but it would be close. The X-Ice should have a little better longevity.

Thanks for the replies.

I ended up buying the Toyo Observe G-02 Plus.  Hopefully (for my car, not for me) we'll get some significant snow soon so I can really try them.  Had some light wet snow today, but the roads were only wet.
