Wiper streaking: possible problem with spring?
« on: November 29, 2005, 09:59:22 am »
I have noticed lately that the passenger side winter wiper streaks frequently. Since the wiper is almost new, I am thinking that there is a problem with one or more of the wiper components....could this be a weak spring due to reduced pressure on the windshield? This becomes more of an issue as wintery conditions are becoming more prevalent. Thanks for any advice.

Is this a winter wiper? streaking is usually due to worn out rubber. I have brand new wipers which work fine.

Yes, it's an almost brand new winter wiper. It appears to only streak on one of the two passes. The wiper doesn't seem to exert much pressure against the windshield....noticeable less than the driver side.

It might have small grease residue on one side of the blade. Try to wipe blades thoroughly with rubbing alcohol.

Did the streaking start with the new blades?  May want to take them back to where you bought them.  Also, I have noticed on my vehicles that rock chips in the windshield can cause streaking.

If they are Canadian Tire Teflon winter blades, then that just may be the way they are.  I had horrible problems with the CT winter blades at speeds over 80 kph in winter driving conditions.  Now using Napa blades without any issues (yet).

check your wiper blades again. return it to CT for exchange. You got defective blades.

Take  a clean rag and wash them off thoroughy before you remove them. Many different type's of road spray end up on the glass including Anti-freeze and oil. They will all smear quite badly on the glass and make a nasty mess. If it is the spring on the arm then go to Crappy Tire and get the right colourd package of the attachment springs to hook on the arms. Each package is a different colour so you have to look up the right one for your car.  These apply a lot more tension on each arm with these attached and can help keep the windsheild clean.  :)

Agreed.  Passenger side blades must be made with better materials.  It's a conspiracy.

Over_cleaning and using alcohol solvents and other rubber"sucking" chemicals CAN reduce yer blades efficiency..a simple wiping off with a claen paper towel is prolly safest.......BUT hey what do they COST $20 a PAIR change 'em seasonally if yer ANAL...twice yearly if yer under free warranty and whenever they rip their bluddy ass off if yer everyone else...!!! :P

I strongley suspect the Napa blades are made of real rubber which is more pliable in the cold weather then the plastic blades in my mind. Probably Trico or Ansco who made them as they are 2 of the best products in blades out there. They do make private label Brand blades for many Companies including GM. GM is made by Trico which is my Faverite blade to use. Unfortunately Trico is getting very hard to find in their own name and the cost is higher for the real Trico brand blade. I now buy the GM's as I can buy them much cheaper No matter what make of Car I drive.  I like the money more in my pocket then theirs.  :)
