I totally agree with Trainman on the proper use of the automatic transmission. I have done the same when pulling loads and driving up steep grades. I have also shifted down a gear on a decent to use the motor and gearing to slow down rather than apply the brakes.

Asking when to use the various gears in an automatic transmission is an excellent question.
But: I am wondering if this AT can be shift while the car is in motion.”  Raises a big flag.

In the best interest of the fourm I will no longer discuss this issue, over and out.
