Yokohama Geolandar I/T+ Winter Tire Review
« on: November 24, 2005, 10:16:57 pm »
Well, here it is, at least what I've got so far.  Winter has only just arrived for real today, two weeks after I had my new winters installed.  What follows are my findings over those two weeks.  I intend to post a more complete review on Tire Trend's site:

--
Tire size:      245/70/16  (T speed rating)
Vehicle:        2003 Kia Sorento EX Luxury
Location:       Montreal
Install date:   November 10, 2005
--

I've just had my winter tires installed and therefore have little data to show.  As the weather is unseasonably warm, it will most likely be a few weeks before any snow falls.  The review that follows will represent data collected over several weeks.

Dry pavement:
-------------
low speed:    quiet, perfectly normal response
high speed:   quiet, no tread squirm, excellent cornering

Wet pavement:
-------------
You can actually hear what sounds like the tire picking up and dispersing the water when going *very slowly*. I've never heard that sound that clearly before.  It almost sounds like water trickling through gravel, only there wasn't any gravel.  Naturally it has to be quiet outside.

low speed:    fairly quiet, perfectly normal response
high speed:   quiet, no tread squirm, excellent cornering

Snow:
-----
Handling is very precise.  Braking is extremely quick.

low speed:    instantaneous braking, no skidding, excellent traction, quiet
high speed:   have not taken them on the highway in snow yet

Wear:
-----
Early indications would point to a quick wearing tire, especially in the warmer weather but that's only a guess at this point.  I'll have to examine the tread in the Spring.

BTW, what do people think of the format?  One thing that has always bugged me about revews on the tire sites was the lack of consistent data or reporting form.  What car, which year? AWD, 4WD, FWD or RWD?   How much snow or ice?  What is your driving style in winter?   Without this information, how can anybody even come close to making a decision?

I tried to follow the other standard points as I agree with them.  I would add at least one other category, though:
Deep Snow

As you see, I left off Ice as there wasn't any to speak of on the roads I traveled that day.

Review addendum:

Driving Style
Moderately spirited with obvious safety concessions to winter.
