Too long a wait. Sounds like some of the problem was out of the dealer's hands though. I hope everything is back to normal for you soon.

Even in the cold winter I havent noticed the sulphur odour for a while  ???....maybe I should leave well enough alone  :-\

Not a surprising wait time, given that you are driving a "Toyota Vibe"  ;)

That being said, good to hear that you finally have your Cat.  The delay was probably due to an upgraded part which was not yet in full production.

Then again, it may have been due to a DSM that was on vacation.



From experience, yeah, sulfur smell stinks, but I have had much more luck by switching gasoline sources than by replacing Catalytics on my customers' cars.  Try a different station (shell had the least sulfur content at last check, Esso had some of the highest) and see if that make a difference.

The sulfur smell is most prominent under higher cat temps, IE driving up a long hill at highway speeds.  There is a hill in Hamilon which will illicit the rotten-egg smell from almost any modern car, depending on Gas quality. The smell dissipates with age as well.

I have heard this tons but I still find it hard to believe. I use only name brand gas and this 'Toyota' Vibe is the only car I have had with this problem. My concurrent car, a Montana Van, although with many problems of its own, never gives off the suplhur odour.

I have an appointment on Monday. Btw, is a cat. replacement an easy job? That is, not alot can go wrong  ::) going to the dealer for this switcheroo?

On a new car like yours it shouldn't be a problem.  In the event they need to replace another piece due to difficulty with removing the old cat I'm sure they will cover that cost as well.

How long should a break in period be for a cat.?

It was more noticeable in the beginning. But I would still get it after 10 k km. Too long.

A cat. which isnt working properly as reflected in the excessive sulphur smell doesnt necessarily throw a check engine light?

Corollas especially are noted for excessive sulfur smells; there is a tsb on reprogramming the controls to reduce this problem.  So I wouldn't be too surprised that the Vibe might experience it as well.

What is the break in period for a cat?  We had a 10 year old Siamese who still smelled terrible.

An update:

Went into the service dept Monday Dec 19 as requested to get the new cat installed (7 or 8 weeks after I first brought in the car to the dealer with the problem  >:( ) Later that day I called as it was well past the time we had agreed upon....I get the ominous response "There's a problem". He says/claims  ::) it is the right part no. but the diameter of the pipe...I think he said "as it goes into the manifold" is incorrect.   

And now I quote from the paperwork: "new pipe has 1.9 0/S diameter, and orig has 2.20 o/s diameter...."

It is now Dec 30 and I called early this afternoon. No idea when the next cat. will arrive. Crazy.

They say that there is more than one way to SKIN a cat, but your dealer doesn't seem able to find even one way to install one. Hopefully you will get one next year. Good luck.  ::)
