Winter Tires For 2001 Civic DX-G 185 70/R 14"
« on: November 19, 2005, 05:29:46 pm »
Hi Everyone,

I found this forum by accident and it seems to be an excellent source of information. I am looking to put winters on my wife's 2001 Civic. It is used primarily for city driving here in Guelph. We are still on the original OEM Firestones and frankly they suck! We don't need top of the line performance tires; but I am willing to consider spending a bit extra to get a better tire. The tires currently in consideration are:
CT Nordic Ice Trac
Michellin X-Ice
Bridgestone Blizzak

Any good recommendations for a tire and a dealer to get them from? I don't mind driving into Mississauga, Brampton, or perhaps even as far west as London for a good price and quality installation.

Thanks in advance for the advice and information

Kumho KW11 is often recommended as a value leader for winter tires, especially in your size. A few years ago, it was rated highly by Consumer Reports.

Here's an excerpt from CR:

Rank #1. Kumho I'Zen Stud KW11: "An excellent choice where snow is less severe. Best dry and wet braking...studdable...T-rated in size tested."
Snow Traction: Good
Braking, Ice: Very Good
Braking, Dry: Excellent
Braking, Wet: Excellent
Handling: Very Good
Hydroplaning: Very Good

Thanks for the reply Davidy,

Are there many dealers who sell Kumho? What would it cost per tire approx?

Tiretrends.com has it for $69.11/tire (GST and shipping is extra). I recommend that you put them on a separate set of four winter wheels. It's makes it much easier to change your tires.

Thanks Morty,

Any feedback from some of your Civic customers about these tires? Are any "better" for such a light vehicle?

I hate to sound like an ass, but I would hurry up and make up my mind if I were you.  By mid December winter tire stocks can get rather low.

IMHO, buy the best tire you can afford.  In my case, I cannot afford an expensive winter tire so I opted for the Uniroyal TigerPaw Snow & Ice for my Focus.  My wife's Crapolier has Firestone Winterforce tires.  It doesn't matter what tire you choose, it will always outperform an all season (especially a crappy OEM tire) in winter conditions.

Good luck.   ;)

From your list, Blizzak or X-Ice.  For city use, you don't need anything with a higher speed rating or built ofr deep snow.  Blizzak WS-50 and Revo1, and X-Ice are highly-rated ice tires.  Just pick one that's on sale and don't wait around for the next snowfall when you need them.

Both the X-Ice and WS50 are great tires. You will get better wear and deep snow performance from the X-Ice. If you are looking for a good economical option then Winter Slalom or KW11.
